SERMON SEEDS

N12 – THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 5, 2016

Sermon Seeds is a mailing of brief sermon outlines from Pastor

Jack Peters.  These outlines are meant to help other pastors and Bible

Teachers in their own preparations, as well as students of the Word in their studies.

These outlines are only "seeds".  They are not sermons ready for you to

preach. Some of these outlines are new. Some have been shared in the past. Feel free to improve on these outlines any way the Lord leads you.

These outlines are based on the King James Version of the Bible, but are usually a “fit” with other translations.

LUKE 2:19-11 – BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT

Every once in a while, you will look at a store window or display board, and find an announcement reading "It's a girl!", or "It's a boy!"

Other times we will hear an announcement on radio or TV announcing the birth of a child to a celebrity.  In the U.S.A. we recently enjoyed the announcement of the birth of 7 babies to one family.

When our Lord Jesus was born there was also an announcement made.

The birth of a very special person, the son of God, required a very special announcement.  Angels made the birth announcement to the shepherds near Bethlehem (Luke 2:8-9).

A PERSONAL BIRTH - "...good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  For unto you..." - The birth of the Lord Jesus was for every living being. It is through his birth and subsequent death that each and every person who believes on Him can have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

A PHYSICAL BIRTH - "...is born..."  - The Son of God literally had a physical birth.  He came to live among us. (Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 9:6, John 1:14)

A PROVIDENTIAL BIRTH - "...a savior..." -  Man is a sinner, with no hope within himself. (Isaiah 64:6, Ezekiel 18:4, Romans 3:9-19, 23)

God provided His Son as our savior to die for us. (Romans 5:6-9, 2 Corinthians 5:21)

A PREEMINENT BIRTH - "...who is Christ the Lord..." - He is the promised "anointed one", the Christ, the Messiah.  He will one day reign over all the earth. (Isaiah 9:5, Isaiah 11:1-16, Micah 5:2)

LUKE 2:21-38 – IN THE WAITING ROOM

I wonder how many hours I've spent in my lifetime sitting in a waiting room waiting for a doctor or a dentist!

Of course, most of us don't like to wait!  We don't like to wait when we are ready to go, and someone else is still getting ready.  We don't like to wait when someone has made us a promise, and we are waiting for that person to keep the promise.

We don't like to wait when someone owes us money and we don't like to wait when we are ready to eat and the chef in the kitchen at the restaurant seems to be taking his sweet time!

Most of us don't like to wait for anything.  And one of the hardest things it seems that God asks us to do is just that - wait. So many times, throughout the Scriptures, God says to wait.

Psalms 27:14, Psalms 62:5, Isaiah 40:31, Lamentations 3:25

In a real sense, we are going to spend our lives here on earth in God's "waiting room", waiting for Him to do what He says he will do. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

Two such people who were in the waiting room when Jesus was born were a man by the name of Simeon, and a woman by the name of Anna.

BACKGROUND:

Luke tells us that Jesus was born in Bethlehem in fulfillment of Micah 5:2.

Angels proclaimed his arrival. Read Vss. 8-14.

The shepherds headed for Bethlehem and saw the child.

Vs. 21 - Jesus is circumcised and named.

Vss. 22-23 - He was brought to Jerusalem.  Because He was the first male child born, He belonged to the Lord in Israel.  The Lord provided for each male child to be "bought back", so to speak.

Vs. 24 - The Law said that each woman who bore a son was ceremonially unclean for 33 days after circumcision. and for a daughter, 66 days. At the conclusion of that period, an offering was to be given to God.  To give you a picture of the economic state of Mary and Joseph, they offered the sacrifice of the poor, 2 doves or young pigeons.

It is now, Mary and Joseph meet up with Simeon and Anna, who was in God's waiting room.
