SERMON SEEDS N2

SERMON SEEDS

N2 – THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 5, 2016

Sermon Seeds is a weekly mailing of brief sermon outlines from PastorJack Peters.  These outlines are meant to help other pastors and Bible

Teachers in their own preparations, as well as students of the Word in their studies.

These outlines are only "seeds".  They are not sermons ready for you to preach.  Feel free to improve on these outlines any way the Lord leads

you.

As seeds these outlines need to be:

WRAPPED (planted)  in the soil of  SUPPLICATION   (prayer).

WATERED with the rain of EDUCATION (doctrine).

WARMED by the sun of  APPLICATION AND ILLUSTRATION.

These outlines are based on the King James Version of the Bible, but are usually a “fit” with other translations.

1 KINGS 18:1-18 – USEABLE!

There are Bible heroes that few people know about, but they have much to teach us. One such hero was Obadiah, a man who worked as the household steward for wicked King Ahab and his wife Jezebel. He was in charge of providing for the practical needs of the King’s household.  He was not the Minor Prophet of the same name. In very troubled times he was very useable by God.

Elijah the Prophet had predicted a drought in 1 Kings 17:1 and then was commanded by God to hide. 3 ½ years later (James 5:17-18) it hadn’t rained and King Ahab was looking for Elijah! It was God’s time for him to reappear and Elijah is told to come out of hiding (Vss. 1-2). His first appearance in Israel was to Obadiah. From this brief story we learn much about him.

HE WAS GOD-FEARING – Vss. 3-4

“…Obadiah feared the Lord greatly…” – He showed his fear of the Lord when he protected 100 prophets who were being persecuted by Jezebel.  Fearing the Lord is an important quality. Job 28:28, Proverbs 1:7, 9:10, Luke 12:4-4

HE WAS RESPONSIBLE – Vss. 3, 5-6

Obadiah had big job taking care of the needs of the King and an extended household. He was obviously trusted by Ahab and would not have such a job if he didn’t do it well. As Christians, we should do everything responsibly.  Proverbs 13:4, Colossians 3:17, 23

HE WAS HUMAN – Vss. 7-14

Elijah appeared to Obadiah and told him to report to Ahab that Elijah was here. Obadiah panicked, knowing that Elijah could disappear and Ahab would blame Obadiah for letting him get away. We all have our moments of weakness, and this was one for Obadiah. Being human, he feared! There are times when our fears will get the best of us (They did for Elijah in 1 Kings 19.). That is when we turn to help from the Scripture and prayer.  Psalms 27:1, 56:3, Proverbs 29:25, 1 Peter 5:8

HE WAS OBEDIENT – 15-18

After receiving reassurances from Elijah that God told him to appear to Ahab that day, Obadiah did as he was told. Though our humanity will show itself, we must in the end be obedient to God’s will. 1 Samuel 15:22-23, Titus 3:1, 1 Peter 1:14

LUKE 2:41-52 - CHILD PRODIGY

According to this Scripture, we would have to call the Lord Jesus Christ the greatest child prodigy of all time. Many excel as children, but no one excelled like the Son of God.  This is the only story we have about Jesus’ childhood after his trip to Egypt as a small child.

We can “wonder” at Him as we consider:

THE WONDER THAT HE WAS MISSING – Vss. 41-45

Jesus was the perfect child, and the last one we would expect to be missing. Remember though, He did nothing wrong. He was sinless.                                                           2 Corinthians 5:21, 1 Peter 2:22

WONDER AT HIS MISSION – Vss. 46-50

Jesus knew His mission from a very early age and made His priority pleasing His Father.   John 4:36

WONDER AT HIS MATURATION – Vss. 51-52

Jesus matured better than any other person that ever lived, but He still had to grow.

John 6:1-21 – LEARNING ABOUT JESUS

Here are some practical lessons about the Lord Jesus in John’s report of the feeding of the 5,000 and His walk on water.

JESUS TESTS US – Vss. 1-5

JESUS KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING – Vs. 6

JESUS MULTIPLIES OUR RESOURCES – Vss. 7-11

JESUS WANTS NOTHING WASTED – Vss. 12-13

JESUS WILL NOT BE MANIPULATED – Vss. 14-15

JESUS IS AVAILABLE DURING TROUBLE – Vss. 16-21

1 TIMOTHY 1:1-7 – ACCURACY IS IMPORTANT

ACCURACY DEMANDED – Vss. 1-3

Timothy stayed in Ephesus after Paul left. His job was to make sure that truth was taught and practiced accurately.  As church members, we should be checking to see if the teaching we are receiving matches the teaching of the Word of God. Acts 17:10-12

ACCURACY DILUTED – Vs. 4

There is some false teaching that dilutes and weakens the truth of God’s Word.

ACCURACY DEVOTED – Vs. 5

Accuracy is devoted to “charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:” Matthew 22:37-40, John 13:34-35

ACCURACY DIVERTED – Vss. 6-7

False teachers were diverting the truth and didn’t know what they were talking about.
