SERMON SEEDS

P4 – THE WEEK OF JANUARY 23, 2017

Sermon Seeds is a mailing of brief sermon outlines from Pastor

Jack Peters.  These outlines are meant to help other pastors and Bible

Teachers in their own preparations, as well as students of the Word in their studies.

These outlines are only "seeds".  They are not sermons ready for you to

preach. Some of these outlines are new. Some have been shared in the past. This week, the outlines have all been shared previously for the Christmas Season.  Feel free to improve on these outlines any way the Lord leads you.

These outlines are based on the King James Version of the Bible, but are usually a “fit” with other translations.

2 Samuel 7 – WHEN GOD SAID “NO!”

In 2 Kings 7 we see that David had plans to build God a house (temple).  God said, “No”.  As we study this passage, we will see that even when God says “No”, He does not cease to be gracious and to have good reasons for the refusals that He makes.

THERE WAS GOOD RESOLVE – Vss. 1-3

·      Vs. 1 – David had a time of peace.  One of the things that David did in his time of peace was to think and plan.

·      Vs. 2 – Nathan the Prophet was a spiritual advisor to King David.  Nathan was a faithful friend who was not afraid to stand up for what is right.

·      David’s statement in verse 2 implied that he was planning to build a permanent building to be the house of God.

·      David realized that he, David, was living in a nice house made of cedar, while God's house was a tent. Remember the ark was a box containing the Ten Commandments, the rod of Aaron, and a jar of manna. On top of the ark was the mercy seat.  God made his physical presence known by dwelling above the mercy seat.

·      Vs. 3 – Nathan was probably thrilled with the prospects of a new house for the Lord.  He could see no reason why God would say “No”.  There are times in our lives when we too have thought something was a good idea until we prayed about it or gave it more consideration.

·      Perhaps Nathan should have prayed about this before he gave his approval.

THERE WAS A SURPRISING REFUSAL – Vss. 4-9

·      Vss. 4-5 – Notice how God refers to David.  Even though God was about to turn David down, it did not mean that David had been demoted in God’s eyes.  Just because God says “No” to us, it does not mean that he thinks any less of us.  We just do not have His plans.

·      David’s motives were actually pure and commendable before God.                                                                 2 Chronicles 6:8

·      God is even clearer in his refusal of David’s plans in 1 Chronicles 17:4, where it says, Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in:

·      Vss. 6-7 – God had not requested that anyone build Him a house.

·      Vss. 8-9 – God had blessed David.  It is important for us to remember how God has blessed us, especially when He says, “No”.

·      Remember that God has different jobs for each one of us. David was primarily a warrior, not a builder.  David’s son was to be the builder. 1 Chronicles 22:8-9

·      We need to remember that God will not give us every job. He has not qualified us for every job. But whatever job God has given us we should do well for Him. Colossians 3:17

THERE WAS COMFORTING REASSURANCE – Vss. 10-17

·      Vss. 10-11 – These verses contain phenomenal promises for David.

·      David is assured of God’s ultimate plan for Israel and for his house. David should have been able to relax.

·      Vss. 12-15 – God’s house would be built by Solomon.  David’s desire would be fulfilled.  Sometimes God chooses to do through someone else what we wanted to do ourselves.

·      Vs. 16 – There will be a time when David’s Kingdom will be established through one of his descendants. Luke 1:30-33

THERE WAS AN AWED RESPONSE – Vss. 18-29

·      Vs. 18 – David was awed by what God had done for him.

·      Vs. 19 – David was awed by the future promises for his family.

·      Vss. 20-21 – David was awed at God’s revelation towards him.

·      Vs. 22 – David was awed at God’s greatness.

·      Vss. 23-24 – David was awed at God’s greatness towards Israel.

·      Vss. 25-29 – In these closing requests David expressed acceptance, faith, and desire before God.

·      1 Chronicles 29:1-9 shows David’s personal commitment of his own resources to the building of the temple.  Although he would not build the temple, he did what he could to make construction easier for Solomon. In these verses, we also see David’s influence on others in the gathering of resources.  David was not bitter because he couldn’t build the temple.  He was enthusiastic that it would be built.

EPHESIANS 1:1-2 – PRIVILEGED!

EPHESIANS – KNOWING AND GROWING #1

The Book of Ephesians shows us the riches we have in Christ and how to use them.

This Book shows us “What to Know!” and “How to Grow!” It is a book about “Knowing and Growing”. The first three chapters are mostly about knowing. The last three chapters are mostly about growing, or maturing in our Christian faith. In all six chapters of Ephesians, what we know will help us grow!

As Paul gives his introduction to Ephesians in the first two verses of the book, we find three privileges we should know that we might grow.

THE WILL OF GOD – Vs. 1a

·      Originally, his name was Saul (same name as a former King of Israel).  He was zealous for the Hebrew faith in every way. Philippians 3:4-6

·      When he came to Christ, Saul started using the name Paul, which means small. His new name indicated the change that took place. Philippians 3:7-9

·      The change in Paul was so dramatic, he became a preacher of the Gospel instead of being a persecutor of the Gospel. Ephesians 3:8, 1 Timothy 1:11-14

·      Paul was named an apostle of Jesus Christ – An apostle is “one sent”. The Apostles of the Lord Jesus were witnesses of the resurrection. Acts 2:14, 32

·      Of course, the 12 Apostles were called. Judas was replaced by Matthias.

·      Paul was called to be an Apostle by the will of God on the Road to Damascus. Acts 26:16-18

·      God had a plan for Paul’s life. Acts 22:12-15

·      God has a plan for your life. Discover God’s will for you, and strive to do it. Romans 12:1-8, 1 Corinthians 12:7, Ephesians 2:10, Colossians 3:17, 23

·      It is a privilege to be saved! Ephesians 2:8-9

·      It is a privilege to serve according to the will of God! 2 Corinthians 5:14-15

THE WORK OF GOD – Vs. 1b

·      This letter was written to saints. A saint is one who is holy or “set apart”.

·      Every believer in Jesus Christ is a saint. John 1:12-13, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11,                      1 Peter 1:15-16

·      It is very possible that the Book of Ephesians was a circular letter, sent to the churches in Asia.

·      Saints are faithful. John 3:16, Hebrews 11:6, 1 Corinthians 4:2, Revelation 2:10

·      Saints are faithful because they are “in Christ Jesus”. – 2 Corinthians 5:17

·      The making of a saint is the work of God. Titus 3:4-6

·      If you are a saint, you are privileged because the work of God has been performed in you.

THE WONDERS OF GOD – Vs. 2

·      Grace was the traditional Roman greeting, or salutation.

·      Peace was the traditional Jewish greeting or salutation.

·      True grace and peace come from God, the Trinity. The Father and the Son are mentioned here. Part of the Fruit of the Spirit is peace. Galatians 5:22

·      Grace – Titus 3:5, 7, John 1:16-17, 2 Peter 3:18

·      Peace – Romans 5:1, Isaiah 26:3-4, Philippians 4:6-7

·      If you are a saint, you are privileged to receive the wonders of God’s grace and peace.
