Sermon Seeds is a mailing of brief sermon outlines from Pasto Jack Peters.                             These outlines are meant to help other pastors and Bible Teachers in their own preparations, as well as students of the Word in their studies.

These outlines are only "seeds".  They are not sermons ready for you to preach.                        Some of these outlines are new. Some have been shared in the past.                                           Feel free to improve on these outlines any way the Lord leads you.

These outlines are based on the King James Version of the Bible, but are usually a “fit” with other translations.

 WORSHIP WITH MUSIC

Worship as a Way of Life #5

MUSIC AND THE WORD

Colossians 3:16 - Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Jeremiah 15:16, 2 Timothy 2:15, 2 Timothy 4:2, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Psalm 119:15-16

MUSIC AND THE SPIRIT

Ephesians 5:18-20 - And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Galatians 5:22-23, Colossians 3:16

There is a connection between being filled with the Spirit and being filled with the Word.  The more I am filled with the Word of God, doing as the Word tells me, the more I will be filled with the Spirit of God.  The more I am filled with the Spirit of God, the more I will desire and allow the Word of God to control me.

MUSIC AND THE VOICE

Psalm 30:4, Psalm 47:6-7, Psalm 66:1-2, Psalm 71:23, Psalm 98:1, Psalm 100:1-2

MUSIC AND THE BAND

Psalm 150:3-6

Psalm 150:6 - The purpose of music in church is to praise the Lord. If the music is played and sung by people because they are truly praising the Lord and not trying to bring glory to themselves, then that is good.

1 Peter 1:15-16 - God is a holy God.

The music that is performed for him is to be totally set apart for him, and not be an imitation of an unsaved world.

Colossians 3:17 - Whatever I do in worship, whatever type of music I play in worship should be done in the name of Jesus.  If Jesus wouldn’t approve, then I shouldn’t do it.

Colossians 3:23 - Whatever the style of worship, it should be done to the glory of God.

EXODUS 2 – GOD’S HAND ON A LIFE

Those who know the Lord can certainly see God’s "hand" of influence on their lives. We can see how God guided us to salvation, the right marriage partner, the right job, the right church, and the right friends. We've seen God's "hand" on us through good times and bad times. Moses also had the "hand" of God upon him.  We can see this in the earliest accounts of Moses' life found in our text.

A REFUGE - Vss. 1-3

Pharaoh had commanded that all newborn male children be killed (Exodus 1:22).

Moses' mother hid him, and then placed him in an ark and placed him in the reeds by the river. This was Moses' refuge from harm.

A RESCUE - Vss. 4-10

God touched the heart of Pharaoh's daughter. Moses grew up under her care. He was raised in the Egyptian court.

A REVOLT - Vss. 11-14

This was a dark time for Moses. In protecting a Hebrew slave he killed an Egyptian. He was forced to run.

A RETREAT - Vss. 15-22

Moses retreated to the wilderness, where he became a shepherd and where he met and married his wife.

A REMEMBRANCE - Vss. 23-25

God remembered his covenant with Israel and heard their cry from bondage.  Actually God never forgot!  God also remembered Moses and was preparing to use Moses in a mighty way to deliver God's people. Although Moses had been set aside, he was soon going to be at the head of God's plans.

Sometimes God will set us aside for a while. This time should be a time of growth and learning for us.  We never know when God will say to us, "It's time to do my work."

PSALM 128-129 – AFFLICTED? WAIT ON THE LORD!

AFFLICTED? – Psalm 129

·      THE FREQUENCY OF THE OPPOSITION – Vss. 1-2

1.    In what ways has Israel been afflicted from her youth?

2.    Why has Israel never been totally wiped out? Genesis 12:1-3, Jeremiah 30:18-22

3.    As Christians, we face opposition. Psalm 34:19, 2 Timothy 3:12, 2 Corinthians 11:3, 2 Peter 5:8

4.    Like Israel, we are assured of ultimate victory.  John 10:27-30, Revelation 22:1-5

·      THE FERVENCY OF THE OPPOSITION – Vs. 3

1.    Why are Satan and those who serve him such fierce opponents? John 15:18, 24-25

2.    Remember that with God’s enabling, we can overcome Satanic attacks, no matter what form they take. Ephesians 6:11-18

·      THE FIGHT AGAINST THE OPPOSITION – Vs. 4

1. It is God’s responsibility to defeat the wicked. Psalm 9:17, Psalm 82:8, Revelation 20:7-15

·      THE FUTILITY OF THE OPPOSITION – Vss. 5-8

1.    Vs. 5 – How have you seen God’s enemies turned back and put to shame?

2.    Vss. 6-7 – Ultimately God’s enemies are not productive.

3.    Vs. 8 – God’s enemies are not to be blessed by us. Psalm 101, 2 John 1:10-11

4.    Vs. 8 – God’s people are to be blessed. Numbers 6:22-27

WAIT ON THE LORD! – Psalm 130

This Psalm is actually one of 7 “penitential psalms”. While the enemy in Psalm 129 comes from without, the enemy in this Psalm is oneself. When I am overwhelmed with my failures, I have a place to come.  For any problem, however, and not just sin, we can indeed wait on the Lord. Psalm 27:14

·      A WORD OF APPEAL - Vss. 1-2

1.    We are reminded that we can call on God when we hurt. He will hear! Psalm 4:1, Psalm 55:22, Philippians 4:6-7, 1 Peter 5:7

2.    We can be assured that when we sin God will hear our sincere confessions. Psalm 32:5, 1 John 1:9

3.    We can be thankful that God is a merciful God. Exodus 34:6-7, Lamentations 3:22-23

·      A WORD OF ADMISSION - Vss. 3-4

1.    We must realize that not one of us has any righteousness before God. Romans 3: 11-20

2.    We only receive mercy when we come to God through Christ. Isaiah 43:25,                 Colossians 2:13-14

3.    We should admit our sins. When we do, there is forgiveness. Psalm 51:1-7

4.    With forgiveness comes reverence. 1 Peter 1:17-19

·      A WORD OF ASSURANCE - Vss. 5-6

1.    A forgiven sinner has a new perspective in his relationship to the Lord.  Once forgiven, he can wait on the Lord in hope.

2.    How do I go about hoping in God’s Word?

3.    When a watchman waits for a morning he is waiting for a sure thing.

4.    Waiting on the Lord should be with greater expectation than the watchman waiting for the morning. After all, it is the Lord who created morning!                  Psalm 27:14

·      A WORD OF ADVICE - Vss. 7-8

1.    Hope in the Lord because of his steadfast love. Jeremiah 31:3

2.    Hope in the Lord because of his plentiful redemption. Isaiah 1:18

PHILIPPIANS 3:4-9– UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

PHILIPPIANS – PARTNERSHIP IN THE GOSPEL #12

We see the sign on businesses all the time: “UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT”.

When Paul met Jesus on the Road to Damascus, he immediately became a person “Under New Management”. Acts 9:1-22

Indeed, every Christian is “Under New Management” the moment they are saved!     1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Here’s Paul’s personal testimony about his salvation.

JAMES 3:1-12 – TONGUE-TIED

It was my first wedding. The bride was 60-something. The groom was 70-something.

They decided on a full church wedding.  To say I was nervous is probably an understatement.

As I was giving a little devotional to the new couple I tried to quote part of Ephesians 4:26, "Don't let the sun go down upon your wrath."  Instead, I said, "Don't end the day without having a fight!" Talk about being tongue-tied, using my tongue in a wrong way, I succeeded!

James gives us a very serious warning in our text.  All people end up getting tongue-tied at one time or another.  We are all guilty of misusing the tongue.

THE IMPORTANT TONGUE - Vss. 2-4

The tongue, although small, is important.  There should not be an excess of teachers (masters), because they will receive greater judgment (condemnation).  Those who teach others are judged by a higher standard than those who are not teachers.

James gives two examples of small things being important.  He refers to the bit placed in a horse's mouth and the rudder (helm) which steers a boat.  Both small things accomplish great results.

THE INFLAMED TONGUE - Vss. 5-6

"The tongue is a fire!"

THE INCONSISTENT TONGUE - Vss. 9-12

THE IMPOSSIBLE TONGUE - Vss. 7-8

(I make this point last, because the solution to the problem is found here.)

No man can tame the tongue! Only God can!

First, we need to trust Christ as Savior.

Next, we need to turn the control of the tongue over to Him.

Romans 13:14 - "But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof."

Galatians 2:20 - "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me."
