William Ernest Henley was a British poet, literary critic, and editor in the late 1900’s in Victorian England. He suffered from many physical problems, including the amputation of his leg. I want to read to you his short poem and I want you to think especially of what he says in the last line of the poem. Do you agree with what he says.

INVICTUS – William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate,

I am the captain of my soul.

Many today would applaud Henley’s last line, but as Christians, we should have strong disagreement. We are beings, created in the image of God. It is God who has redeemed us through His Son. Jesus is the Master of my fate. Jesus is the captain of my soul. My commitment is to be to Him.

Our theme in all our services has been “Family Talk”. In the morning service we have been “Talking Church as a Family.”

  • We began by observing that “We are Family” established by Jesus and commissioned to fulfill the “Great Commission”.
  • We then observed “The Family Memorial”, the Lord’s Table.
  • We talked about the first part of Family Commitment, which is “Believe”.
  • Last week we discussed “The Family Responsibility” to love one another as Christ as loved us.
  • We return to Family Commitment this week to see three commitments we must make as members of the Family of God.

These three commitments are clearly seen in the Story of the Day of Pentecost and Peter’s great sermon.
