MEET TRUE FREEDOM
Description

JOHN 8:12 – MEET TRUE FREEDOM

MEETING JESUS IN THE GOSPEL OF JOHN #17

We need freedom from bondage of sin, not only so we can be forgiven and spend eternity with God in Heaven, but also so we can have freedom from habitual or persistent sin now. In this passage Jesus tells us that in order to have true freedom:

BE A POSSESOR, NOT A PROFESSOR – John 8:31-32

  • Vs. 30 – Many believed in Jesus.
  • Vss. 31-32 – Jesus was not fooled. He knew that not all who professed belief really were believers.
  • Jesus is saying “If you are a true believer in me there will be change in your life.” You will abide in His Word, believing it, loving it and obeying it.
  • The more you know, believe, and obey the Word of God, the more you will be set free to live a life assured of eternal life and victorious over sin.
  • Many people claim to believe in Christ, but they are not trusting Him for forgiveness of sin. The belief needed is not an intellectual commitment, but a heart commitment.
  • Believing that you are a sinner (Romans 3:10, 23) and you can not atone or pay for your own sins in any way.
  • Believing that the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s Son died for your sins and rose again. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
  • Believing that Jesus alone can save you based on what He did on the cross, you trust the Lord Jesus as your Savior. Romans 10:9-10
  • It is then when you become a possessor of salvation and not a professor.
  • Then you will begin to know the truth that sets you free. Jesus is the truth. God’s Word is truth. John 14:6, 17:17
  • It is then you have a hunger to know God’s Word, follow Jesus, obey Jesus, and let Him set you free. John 14:15
  • Charles Blondin – Crossed Niagra Falls on a tightrope many times, at least once with his manager, Harry Colcord, on his back. He was a possessor of faith in Blondin, not just a professor!

BE A SON NOT A SLAVE – John 8:33-36

  • Vs. 33 – The first thing these supposed believers do is argue with Jesus that they have never been in bondage to anyone. Historically that just was not true, beginning with slavery in Egypt, and at the current time, under Roman domination.
  • It is likely that what they were claiming was they were never in Spiritual bondage to anyone. They were “children of Abraham”, and therefore not in Bondage. They were under Abraham’s umbrella. Genesis 17:7
  • Vs. 34 – Jesus answers them with stark reality, the one who is guilty of continued sinning, that is habitual sin, is a slave to sin.
  • Vs. 35 – A slave can be disposed of at any time. A son cannot. The son is the heir. He abides forever. In the Father’s House, the slave, who is in bondage will not live forever will perish. The Son, however, the Lord Jesus, lives forever.
  • Vs. 36 – Because Jesus died for our sins, rose again, and ascended into Heaven, He set free, whoever He will.
  • When a person truly trusts Christ as Savior, he or she is born again into the family of God and adopted as well. John 1:12, 13, Galatians 4:4-7

BE A VICTOR NOT A VICTIM – John 8:36

  • Although we will always sin in this life because we are in the flesh, sin does not need to dominate us.
  • Jesus came to not only to free us for eternal life but came to free us from habitual sin.
  • We go back to John 8:31-32 – We will know the truth and the truth will set us free.
  • Vs. 36 – We know the Son and the Son will set us free.
  • Romans 6:14, Romans 8:1-4, Galatians 5:13, Galatians 2:20
