HEBREWS 1:4-14 – OUR SUPERIOR SOVEREIGN

  • Think of the U.S. President or world leader, living or dead, for whom you have the most respect.

Was he perfect? Did he have any faults? Did he have absolute power? Meaning, could he control everything?

  • Think of the religious leader, living or dead, for whom you have the most respect.                                                                  Was he perfect? Did he have any faults? Did he have absolute power?
  • Think of the pastor, living or dead, for whom you have the most respect.                                                                    Was he perfect? Did he have any faults? Did he have absolute power?
  • Think of the Christian, living or dead, for whom you have the most respect.                                                                    Was he or she perfect? Did he or she have any faults? Did he or she have absolute power?
  • Think of the Lord Jesus Christ, who is living. Is He perfect? Does He have any faults? Does He have absolute power?

How you view the Lord Jesus Christ will have tremendous impact on your life now and in the future. There is no created being greater than Him. That’s because He is not a created being. He is God!

When we think of created beings who have superior qualities to us, we think of angels. In the passage which Joe just read we see that Jesus is superior to any angel. Angels were well respected by the Jews and even venerated. With many people, they still are today. But it’s all about Jesus, and he is above all.

Let’s look at our Superior Sovereign!

Background – Hebrews 1:1-3

His Position – Hebrews 1:4-5

  • Vs. 4 – Although the angels collectively were referred to as “the sons of God”, no angel was a Son by inheritance. Thus, Jesus has the greater name.

  • Vs. 5b – 2 Samuel 7:14

His Praise – Hebrews 1:6

  • “firstborn” speaks of rank and honor.
  • First coming angels worshipped Him!
  • “again” refers to second coming to earth in judgment. Deuteronomy 32:43, Psalm 97:7, Philippians 2:10-11

His Preeminence – Hebrews 1:7-9, 13-14

  • Vs. 7 – Psalm 104:4 – “And like wind, angels are invisible, powerful, and travel quickly.” David Levy
  • Vss. 8-9 – Psalm 45:6-7
  • Vss. 13-14 – Psalm 110:1

His Power – Hebrews 1:10-12
