1PETER 1:13-16 – A WORK IN PROGRESS

HOLY LIVING IN A HOSTILE WORLD (1 PETER) #4

The Winchester Mystery House is a mansion in San Jose, California, that was once the personal residence of Sarah Winchester, the widow of firearm magnate William Wirt Winchester. Located at 525 South Winchester Blvd. in San Jose, the Queen Anne Style Victorian mansion is renowned for its size, its architectural curiosities, and its lack of any master building plan. It is a designated California historical landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is privately owned and serves as a tourist attraction.

Since its construction in 1884, the property and mansion were claimed by many to be haunted by the ghosts of those killed with Winchester rifles. Under Winchester's day-to-day guidance, its "from-the-ground-up" construction proceeded around the clock, by some accounts, without interruption, until her death on September 5, 1922, at which time work immediately ceased.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_Mystery_House

For 38 years the Winchester Mansion was “a work in progress”. There have probably been several such throughout history that took years to complete and for a time was “a work in progress”.  Another example of this would be Herod’s Temple which was a temple remodel and expansion in Jerusalem that lasted for decades.

Sometimes we refer to ourselves or others as “a work in progress”. We haven’t matured or grown up to be what we should be, but we hope to improve.

P B P G I N T W M Y - Years ago I believe it was Bill Gothard who used these letters for the slogan, “Please be patient, God is not through with me yet.”

We are studying the Book of 1 Peter. We are calling it “Holy Living in a Hostile World. In the previous verses which we have studied, I believe Peter is tell us that as Christians we are “a work in progress.”

Vs. 3 – New Birth – Salvation – Believing the Gospel, trusting Christ as Lord and Savior.

Vss. 3-5 – Talks about our final salvation.

Vss. 6-9 – Talk about what is happening now in our lives. We are constantly being saved through all sorts of things and should approach it with joy!

These verses show that we are a work in progress. Salvation began, salvation continues through this life, and salvation is completed when we receive our new resurrection bodies.

Vss. 10-12 simply tell us that all of this was predicted in the Old Testament and that these prophets were writing for our benefit.

Now, I have a question for you. If you are a work in progress, are you progressing? Are you growing in grace (2 Peter 3:18)? Are you acting more like Jesus than you were a week, month, or year ago?

We’ll be a work in progress until we see Jesus, but 13-19 give instructions on how to actually make progress.

I would like to give you four words that will help us understand these verses.

FOCUS – 1 Peter 1:13

The people in those days and in that culture wore long, flowing robes. When they had work to do or were on an urgent mission they would use a belt and get the robes under control so they could move freely.

Your thoughts are like long, flowing robes. They’ll flow in all sorts of ways on all sorts of things. And Satan knows what thoughts are most likely to trip you up. How many times are our thoughts kidnaped to go to places where they shouldn’t go. Matthew 15:19

Our thoughts need to be controlled. Ephesians 6:14 (KJV) - Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth,

John 17:17, Psalm 119:11, Philippians 4:8

be sober, - Don’t be intoxicated with anything or anyone but the Spirit of God – 1 John 2:15-17, Ephesians 5:15-18

FAITH – 1 Peter 1:13

Faith is current

Hope is future, expectant faith. Romans 8:23, Philippians 3:20-21

FAITHFULNESS – 1 Peter 1:14-16

Vs. 14 – “Children of Obedience” – I am to live in love with Jesus. I am to obey because I love Jesus. Obedience in a sense is my Mama!

Vss. 15-16 – Because our God is holy, we are to be holy. God is holy in that he is “set apart” from all evil.

Our example is the Lord Jesus Christ. He was not stodgy, stuck up or holier than thou. He was “meek and lowly in heart.” Luke 6:40

FEAR – 1 Peter 1:17

Luke 12:1-5, Malachi 2:5

You are a work in progress, so make progress!

Focus – Faith – Faithfulness – Fear

1 PETER 3:1-7 – A MARRIAGE THAT PLEASES GOD

God established marriage and approves of it. - Genesis 2:22-24, Hebrews 13:4

Christians should only marry Christians - 2 Corinthians 6:14-15

God has plans for your marriage.

Christian men will only be truly happy with Christian women that practice 1 Peter 3:1-6.

Christian women will only be truly happy with Christian men that practice 1 Peter 3:7

THE CHRISTIAN WIFE - Vss. 1-6

  • EXHORTATION - Vss. 1-2

Women are encouraged to live in submission to their husbands.

This does not mean that the man is superior to his wife, but for the sake of God's order, she is to submit to her husband's leadership.

Husbands need to remember, however, that they are to help the wives to be submissive by loving them as Christ loved the church. Ephesians 5:25

Women are also encouraged to win their husbands to a Godly obedience by their quiet, chaste conversation.

  • EXPLANATION - Vss. 3-4

Peter is not saying that is wrong to fix one's hair, or to wear jewelry or nice clothes.  He is saying that true adornment is that of a "meek and quiet spirit".

  • EXAMPLE - Vss. 5-6

Sara, and other Godly women of the Bible (Ruth, Esther, Mary) serve as positive examples for the women of today.

THE CHRISTIAN HUSBAND - Vs. 7

  • REQUIREMENTS

The husband is to understand his wife.

The husband is to honor his wife.

  • REASONS

The wife is considered to be the "weaker vessel".

The wife is a "joint heir" of the "grace of life".

A husband's prayers are hindered when he doesn't treat his wife properly.

PSALM 97 – KNOWING GOD’S SOVEREINTY

KNOWING GOD #2 OF 7

(Note: This is a series basically on the attributes of God. Very Complete Notes, so be creative in adapting them. If you don’t change some of it, be sure to give me credit for writing your sermon. Otherwise, I don’t need credit. :-)

One of the great attributes of God is that He is sovereign.

In our last message we started on a quest.  The quest is to know God better.  Jeremiah 9:23-24

If we are going to know God better we need to know His sovereignty. And by “knowing” I don’t mean to have an intellectual knowledge that God is sovereign, but to have a heart knowledge that God is sovereign so that knowledge of his sovereignty affects the way I live.

For a practical look at the sovereignty of God this morning I want us to look at Psalm 97.  In this Psalm we discover:

THE REALITY OF GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY

Psalm 97 begins with a great statement of fact.

Psalm 97:1 - The Lord reigneth;

When someone reigns they are ruling, they are in control, they are kings.

When we say, “God is sovereign”, we are saying, “God is ruler, God is King.”

God’s sovereignty is attested to in the Scriptures. Psalms 93:1, 96:10, 99:1, 95:3, Revelation 1:8, 11:15

When I think of the Lord’s reign, I think of God the Son, the Lord Jesus.

  • Jesus reigns as creator. Colossians 1:16

  • Jesus reigns as the one who holds all things together. Colossians 1:17

  • Jesus reigns as victor over sin.

God in His reign over earth gave man freedom.

Man chose to rebel against God.

God in his love sent the sinless son of God to pay for our sins. Romans 5:6

  • Jesus reigns as victor over death. – Revelation 1:18

As victor over death, Jesus wants to give you victory over death. John 3:16-18

As victor over death, Jesus wants to give you victory in life right now. Romans 5:17

  • Jesus reigns as heir of all things. Psalm 110:1

Our God reigns! He is sovereign! He is King!

This is reality!

This should effect how you, if you are a Christian think about things.

It should effect how you, if you are a non-Christian, think about things.

THE RUDIMENTS OF GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY

What are some of the fundamental principles or rudiments of God’s sovereignty?

Vss. 2-6 – First of all, see here that God is awe-inspiring.

Clouds, darkness, lightnings, fire, melting hills, show Him to be awesome.  God has shown himself to be awe-inspiring on many an occasion.  Here are three more.

God showed himself awe-inspiring to the children of Israel at Sinai. Exodus 19:16-19

Isaiah saw God as awe-inspiring in Isaiah 6:1-4.

At the Transfiguration Jesus showed Himself to be awe-inspiring. Matthew 17:1-2

Not only is God’s Sovereignty awe-inspiring, it righteous and just. Psalm 97:2

Get this in your mind: whatever God does is right and just.

You are not always right.

You are not always just.

But God is.

It is easy for us to wonder if what God is doing is right or just.  But in God’s great scheme of things as the all-knowing, all-powerful God, what He does is always right and just! Isaiah 55:8-9

Not only is God’s sovereignty awe-inspiring, righteous, and just, but God’s sovereignty is above all Gods. Psalm 97:7, 9

As God, He tolerates no substitutes!

No other God is to be worshipped! Isaiah 42:8

You may be thinking, “We’ll I’m safe, I don’t worship any idols.”

I remind you that an idol or a God is not always made with hands, but it is always made in the heart.

Exodus 34:14 - For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

The rudiments of God’s sovereignty - God’s sovereignty is awe-inspiring, righteous, just, and above all Gods.

THE RESPONSES TO GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY

I see three responses to God’s sovereignty in this Psalm.

  • RESPOND IN LOVE

Vs. 10 – Ye that love the Lord

Have ever considered loving the Lord because He is sovereign?

Have you considered loving the Lord because He is awe-inspiring, because He is righteous, because He is just, because He is above all Gods?

Yes, we should love Him if He has saved us and we have everlasting life!

But we would not have everlasting life, if God in His sovereignty had not provided a way of forgiveness for our sins.

God in his sovereignty declared us Christians as righteous and just in His eyes through the death of His Son.

There has been many a good king or queen who has been loved for their rule over a nation.

We serve the King of the universe. Should we not love Him?

  • RESPOND WITH HATRED

Psalm 97:10 - Ye that love the Lord, hate evil:

It makes sense, doesn’t it?  If I love the Lord, I will hate what He hates.  He hates evil.

Now, I have a word of warning for you.  It is very easy for us to hate the evils of drugs, homo-sexuality, murder, and injustice in the world.  But I feel that the evil we should hate is the evil that we allow in our own lives.

Do you a habit that displeases the Lord? Hate it and forsake it!

Do you have an attitude that displeases the Lord? Hate it and forsake it.

As a child of God who loves the Lord, I should hate evil in myself more than any other evil there is!

  • RESPOND IN LOVE
  • RESPOND WITH HATRED
  • RESPOND WITH JOY AND THANKSGIVING

Psalm 97:1 - The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.

Psalm 97:12 - Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

If we know in our hearts that God is sovereign.

If we have accepted God’s sovereignty as meaning that God is not only king of the universe, but King in my life.

If we know that nothing can happen today unless God knows about it in advance and that it is permitted by Him.

Then we should be joyful and thankful to our God who is KING!
