COLOSSIANS 2:6-7 – TWO WORDS

There are two words important to living the Christian Life.

The two words are “in Him”, meaning “in Christ”. In fact, when the Bible says “in Christ” or “in whom”, it is referring to being “in Him”.

Our text this morning is Colossians 2:6-7 (Read)

This is a continuation of the concept we taught last week, walking with God. Genesis 5:24, Amos 3:3

  1. We Start at the Same Point - Genesis 5:21-22, Amos 3:3
  2. We Have the Same (Two-fold) Purpose – God’s glory, Christ’s Kingdom
  3. We Proceed at the Same Pace – Galatians 5:22-26
  4. We End at the Same Place – Genesis 5:24

This three-fold title for the Lord Jesus appears only here in Paul’s writings. If we are born-again Christians, we have received Christ Jesus the Lord by faith. Hebrews 11:6

If we walk with Him now, it will be by faith.

Each of Christ’s names has meaning for this faith walk.

Colossians 2:6 – The Name “Christ” means “Anointed One” or “Messiah” and speaks of His Deity.

Colossians 1:15 - Charles Erdman - "'Firstborn' here means two things: priority in time and supremacy in place or position. Christ existed before the Creation, but He held the rank commonly assigned to the 'firstborn’, the rank of eminence and dominion.  Christ is thus declared to be the universal sovereign." Charles Erdman, The Epistles of Paul to the Colossians and to Philemon, © 1966 by W.L. Jenkins, Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, Page 52

Colossians 1:16-17 – Christ is Creator and Sustainer.

Colossians 2:9 – Christ is God and is to be worshipped as part of the Trinity. Hebrews 13:15, Revelation 4:11-15

TO WALK BY FAITH IN CHRIST IS TO WALK IN WORSHIP

The Name “Jesus” means “Jehovah will save”. This speaks of His Duty. Matthew 1:21, Ephesians 1:7

Obviously, we must trust Christ by faith (Ephesians 2:7-8) and we must be devoted to Him by faith.

1 John 4:10, 18-19, Matthew 10:37, Mark 12:28-30

TO WALK BY FAITH IN JESUS IS TO WALK IN LOVE AND DEVOTION

The name “the Lord” refers to Jesus as Jehovah, as Master. This speaks of His Destiny.  Colossians 2:10, 1:18, Philippians 2:9-11

We can’t claim that Jesus is Lord unless we strive to obey Him. 1 John 2:2-6

TO WALK BY FAITH IN THE LORD IS TO WALK IN OBEDIENCE

Colossians 2:7 – This is how we do it!

JOSHUA 22:1-8 – HONORABLE DISCHARGE

#17 – MOVING FORWARD – THE BOOK OF JOSHUA

  • What does it mean to receive an honorable discharge? Other than from the military, where is it possible to receive an honorable discharge?
  • Joshua 21:43-45 nicely sums up the first 21 chapters of the Book of Joshua.

The fighting was done for now. It was time for Joshua to send the Tribes of Reuben and Gad and half of the Tribe of Manasseh home to the other side of the Jordon. They had promised to fight until the war was over. In Joshua 22:1-8, Joshua gives them their honorable discharge.

THEY WERE REWARDED – Vss. 1-3, 8

  • Vss. 1-3 - Joshua calls together this group of men and gives them one of the best rewards of all. They received the “well done” pronouncement by their general. What did they do to gain it?
  1. They had done what Moses and Joshua had told them to do. They were obedient. Joshua 1:12-18
  2. They had been faithful all the way through for seven years.
  • Vs. 8 - There were the physical rewards from conquering the land. There was much spoil.
  • Jesus will reward His servants with what are known as crowns.
  1. The Crown of Life – James 1:12, Revelation 2:10
  2. The Incorruptible Crown – 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
  3. The Soul Winners’ Crown – 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20
  4. The Crown of Righteousness – 2 Timothy 4:6-8
  5. The Crown of Glory – 1 Peter 5:1-4
  • The rewards were shared with those who were faithful on the home front.                                                            Numbers 31:25-27, 1 Samuel 30:21-25

THEY WERE RETURNED – Vss. 4, 6, 7, 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18

THEY WERE REMINDED – Vs. 5

  1. Take Diligent Heed to the Command and the Law. – 2 Timothy 2:15, Jeremiah 15:16
  2. Take Diligent Heed to Love the Lord Your God. – Matthew 22:35-39, 1 John 4:19
  3. Take Diligent Heed to Walk in all His Ways. – 1 John 2:6
  4. Take Diligent Heed to Keep His Commandments. – 1 Samuel 15:22-23, John 14:15
  5. Take Heed to Cleave (Cling) to His Commandments (Be Faithful!). – 1 Corinthians 4:2
  6. Take Diligent Heed to Serve Him with All Your Heart, and All Your Soul. – Colossians 3:17

1 SAMUEL 2:1-2 – REASONS TO REJOICE

Hannah was very happy because God had answered her prayer for a son (See 1 Samuel 1). The beginning of Hannah's prayer reminds us of four reasons that every Christian has for giving praise to God:

REJOICE IN GOD'S SALVATION - Vs. 1

REJOICE IN GOD'S SANCTITY (HOLINESS) - Vs. 2a

REJOICE IN GOD'S SIGNIFICANCE ("There is none beside thee.") - Vs. 2b

REJOICE IN GOD'S STRENGTH AND SECURITY (ROCK) - Vs. 2c

Psalm 119:65 – PARTNERSHIP

Psalm 119:63 - "I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts."

Who can be my partner?

· Who can I work closely with?

· In our text the Psalmist is saying, "I am the companion of anyone who fears my God and obeys his word."

· Let us think of the word "fear" as being "respect".  The only one who can truly be my partner is the one who fears or respects the same things that I fear or respect.

  • As a Christian, there are at least four things that a partner of mine must respect.

RESPECT FOR GOD'S WAY

A partner of mine must agree with God's way for a person to enter Heaven through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. John 3:14-18, John 14:6, Ephesians 2:8-9

We can not be partners with those who are unbelievers. 2 Corinthians 6:14

RESPECT FOR GOD'S WORD

If I truly respect God, I must respect His Word.

My partner must also respect God's Word.

Psalm 119:89, Romans 15:4, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:21

RESPECT FOR GOD'S WORK

God's work is the Great Commission. A partner of mine needs to be interested in carrying out God's plan of evangelism and church growth. Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15

RESPECT FOR GOD'S WALK

God has a code of conduct for us. We need to walk in obedience to Him. We must keep His precepts.  1 Samuel 15:22-23, Micah 6:8, 1 Peter 1:15-16, Galatians 6:1

JOHN 3:14-20 – NEW LIFE

People who have never been born again are "dead in trespasses and sins". (Ephesians 2:1)

They need "new life" that is only found in Christ.

COMMITMENT OF CHRIST - Vss. 14, 16a, 17

In order for people to have new life, Jesus was lifted up to die for sin like the serpent in the wilderness. Vs. 14, Numbers 21:4-9

God gave His Son over to death that we might have eternal life. Vs. 16a

Jesus' purpose for coming to earth was to bring salvation. Vs. 17

CONFIDENCE IN CHRIST -Vss. 15, 16b, 18a

Belief in Christ brings eternal life. There is no condemnation for the one who trusts Christ as Savior.

CONDEMNATION WITHOUT CHRIST - 18b-20

CONDUCT THROUGH CHRIST - Vs. 21

When a person trusts Christ as Savior his life changes. He deals with his sins and acts in truth.

2 CORINTHIANS 6:3-10 – HE PROVED IT!

How do we show ourselves to be the true servants of God! Like Paul, we prove it!

IN VARIOUS SITUATIONS Vss. 4-5

"But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings;"

Paul faced all sorts of problems for the cause of Christ. You might want to refer to some of the things he talks about in 2 Corinthians 11:24-33.

WITH VITAL STRENGTH Vss. 6-7

"By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,"

Paul relied on God for the strength he needed during trying times.

WITH VICTORIOUS SUPERIORITY Vss. 8-10

"By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed;

As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things."

Paul had victory in God that made him superior in every situation that he faced.

HEBREWS 11:32-40 - MEN OF FAITH

Hebrews 11 is the "Faith Chapter" in the Bible. Earlier in the chapter the stories of great men and women of faith are featured. In this passage the author mentions several names of well known men  and then mentions those who's names he does not share.  The important thing is that these were men of faith (Hebrews 11:6).

POPULAR MEN - Vs. 32

Here were men of renown, well know men.

POWERFUL MEN - Vss. 33-35a

God worked mighty miracles through them.

PERSECUTED MEN - Vss. 35b-38

Some of men of faith are severely tested through persecution.

PROMISED MEN - Vss. 39-40

These men were promised a Messiah who had not yet come. 1 Peter 1:10-11

They had to wait until the time of Christianity for God to fulfill the promise of redemption.

REVELATION 22:21 - WISHING YOU GOD'S BEST

What is the nicest thing that you can wish for somebody?  I believe that it's wishing that they would have God's best in their lives!  What is God's best for every person? John sums it up in the last verse found in the Bible, "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen."

It is interesting to note that John ends his great book of prophecy with a benediction. After giving the most complete description of the end times, He wishes his readers "grace" or unmerited favor.

What are some of the blessings of grace that we should wish on others, that God has wished on us?

SALVATION BY GRACE

Ephesians 2:8-9

STRENGTH BY GRACE

Philippians 4:13, Acts 1:8, Ephesians 3:16, Peter 5:10

SERENITY BY GRACE

Isaiah 26:3-4, John 14:27, Philippians 4:6-7

SUPPLY BY GRACE

Psalm 23:1, Philippians 4:19, Matthew 16:33

May you, my friend, have the grace of salvation, the grace of God's strength, the grace of God's serenity, and the grace of God's supply.
