LUKE 17:11-19 – GRATITUDE BY THE NUMBERS

TEN HURTING – Vss. 11-12

  • Biblical leprosy was a terrible disease, eating away at the body. Those who had leprosy were ostracized from family and community life. These men had no hope but wasting away and dying.
  • We were helpless. Ephesians 2:1-3, Ephesians 2:11-12

TEN ASKING – Vs. 13

  • Calling on Jesus to “have mercy” on them was certainly logical. He had headed many different people.
  • Calling on Jesus to have mercy will also save us!            Romans 10:13

TEN HEALED – Vs. 14

  • Showing oneself to the priests was the step in getting back into society.
  • How dramatic it was for these men to suddenly feel and look better than they had in years. Imagine their joy and their anxious anticipation in rejoining family and friends.

ONE RETURNING – Vss. 15-16

  • One man returned to Jesus glorifying God. He fell at Jesus’ feet, thanking Him.
  • This man was a Samaritan, “a half-breed Jew”.

ONE SAVED – Vss. 17-19

  • Vs. 18 – The Lord Jesus was not disappointed that the Samaritan came, but that it was only the Samaritan.
  • Vs. 19 – He had a healed body, and a healed soul. Literally, “You faith has saved you.” Ephesians 2:8-9

DEUTERONOMY 6:1-15 – LOVING GOD

Does it sound trite if I say, "God loves you"?

It's a statement you have heard often.

It's a statement that you usually don't reflect upon when you hear it.

But nonetheless, it is a true statement!

God's love appears in the first verse of the Bible!

Genesis 1:1- "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."

It is God who loved us enough to create the world in all its beauty.

It is God who loved us enough to create every living creature, including you and I.

If God didn't love us, we would be here.

God's love doesn't stop with creation. Every man and woman, boy and girl has disobeyed God. We've all blown it! In His love, God sent His Son to pay for the sins that we have committed. In paying for our sins, God made it possible for every person to have forgiveness of sin, and everlasting life! John 3:16

Now, must of you hearing this message have already experienced forgiveness of sin, and are on your way to heaven. God's love continues towards you.

Because God loves you as His child, He has promised to never leave or to forsake you. Hebrews 13:5

Because God loves you, He answers your prayers. Matthew 7:7-11

Because God loves you, He, through the Holy Spirit, lives inside of you. Romans 8:9

Because God loves you, we are promised that nothing can separate us from that love in Romans 8:38-39.

Now, if you are saved and know that you are going to Heaven, what is the logical response to God's love? WE ARE TO LOVE HIM IN RETURN! 1 John 4:19

How can we go about loving God?  Deuteronomy 6:1-12 shows us how.

Vss. 4-5 give us the central theme of the passage preached by Moses before the Children of Israel entered the Promised Land.

Vs. 4 reminds us that there is but one God.

What does the existence of one true God mean to you and I as Christians?

He alone is to be worshipped in our lives.

He is to be considered first when we make a decision.

Pleasing Him should be the most important thing in the world.

After all, he is God! What does it matter what anyone else thinks?

Anyone else is just human like you!

Vs. 5 - Love for God is to a total commitment. All that is inside of me, the real me, heart and soul, is to love God. All my strength is to go into loving God.

If you love God, He will be the principle part of your decision making process. You will want to please Him, want to talk to Him, want to talk about Him, want to spend time with Him. You will want to read His love letters, the Bible. You will want to understand His word. You will want to listen to music about Him, and music dedicated to Him. You will want others to experience the same love relationship that you have experienced.

This kind of love for God is impossible without God's help.

It is the Holy Spirit who will assist us. When the Spirit of God fills us, we will be successful in loving God the way He wants to be loved. Ephesians 5:18-20

When we love God as Verse 5 tells us to, with all our heart, soul and might, certain things will be true of us.

THE ONE WHO LOVES GOD, FEARS GOD - Vs. 2

If I love God with all my heart, soul, and strength, I will reverence Him. I will respect Him. I will be afraid to displease Him.

If I love Him, He will have the reverence of my praise.

If I love Him, He will have the reverence of respectful approach to Him in Jesus' name.

If I love Him, He will have the reverence of my speaking well of Him. Nobody can take the Lord's name in vain and truly claim to love Him.

If I love Him, His Word will be respected.

If I love Him, I will realize that disobedience hurts Him, and is a show of disrespect.

If I love Him, I will realize that I am accountable to Him, that He is my judge, and disobedience breaks his Heart.

If I love Him, there is only one sentence necessary from the mouth of my master, "Well done thou good and faithful servant."

THE ONE WHO LOVES GOD, OBEYS GOD - Vs. 2

We do not keep commands in order to earn our way into Heaven or to stay saved. Hebrews 10:14

We keep his commands because we love Him.

Much of the Old Testament Law is no longer necessary for us to keep, such as the sacrifices and keeping of holy days. This is because Christ has fulfilled these things.

But Jesus did say, "If you love me keep my commandments." John 14:15

And Jesus did say, "Ye are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command you." John 15:14

1 John 5:3 says, "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous."

THE ONE WHO LOVES GOD REMEMBERS GOD'S WORD - Vs. 6

The words that Moses was giving the Israelites were the Words of God.

These were words worth remembering. These were valuable words. We try to remember important things, like dates, instructions, appointments, and valuable sayings. What could be more valuable than remembering the Word of God? Hiding God's Word in your heart is very valuable, not only because God tells us we should, but because of what it will do for you.

Hiding God's Word in your heart will:

Keep you from sin. Psalm 119:11

Lead you to obey. - Joshua 1:8

Help you to pray. - John 15:7

THE ONE WHO LOVES GOD TEACHES HIS CHILDREN VS. 7

Your goal should be to train you children in the things of God!

Your God is the true God. Your children need to know that!

They will see God as you live the Christian life before them.

They will learn of God, as you talk about the Word of God at the table and at appropriate places in your travels.

When God answers a prayer, tell your children.

When God shows you something special in his Word, show them.

When God gives you a special blessing, tell them.

When God takes care of you during a trial, share it.

And be sure to read the Bible together as a family!

Also be sure to apply god's word to the problems and successes that your child is experiencing.

THE ONE WHO LOVES GOD KEEPS GOD'S WORD IN VIEW Vss. 8-9

God's Word is not something to be forgotten,

It is something that should be in our view, and the view of our families.

We can literally place it in front of our eyes with plaques.

We can literally put it into our hands and read it!

We can literally put it before our minds eye through memorization.

THE ONE WHO LOVES GOD TAKES PRECAUTIONS TO REMEMBER GOD Vss. 10-12

The Israelites were warned that God's goodness would lead to their complacency. They had to be careful not to get so comfortable in their new land, that they forget the Lord and slip into idolatry.

In Verse 12, the Israelites are not to forget Egypt.

They were not to forget the bondage.

They were not to forget the slavery.

They were not to forget that God had delivered them!

We are to do the same. Egypt reminds me of the bondage of sin.

We are to never forget what god has delivered us out of.

We must never forget the slavery that sin causes, and the great victory that Jesus gave us.

We must continually remember that it was the grace of God that delivered us.

2 KINGS 2:1-15 – THE CONCLUSION OF SERVICE

GOOD (FAITHFUL) SERVANT FOR BAD TIMES #11

(I mixed up the numbering. This is #11 and the last of the series.)

  • In what ways do people handle their own death?
  • Is there a “cookie-cutter” way of handling death?
  • Why would we want to talk about handling death?
  • Why is it easier to handle death as a Christian.

God’s good and faithful servant, Elijah, was going to leave this world and he knew it!  Although he did not die before he was taken to Heaven, he still left! Here are some things we can glean about preparing for death when it appears imminent.

  1. Elijah (And Everyone Else) Knew It Was Time – Vss. 1,3, 5

  1. Elijah Tested His Successor – Vss. 2, 4, 6

  1. People Were Watching – Vs. 7

  1. Elijah Performed One Last Miracle – Vs. 8

  1. Elijah Encouraged His Successor – Vss. 9-10

  1. Elijah Went Home Victoriously – Vs. 11

PSALM 78:1-8 – HELPING THE NEXT GENERATION

Each generation has a responsibility to help the next generation.  Many of the technological advances of previous generations have helped this generation. It is the older generations that teach the younger generation at home and in school.

This passage talks about giving Spiritual help to the next generation.

REMEMBER THE TRUTH - Vss. 1-3

Those who know God through Christ must give ear to His Word and obey it.

They cannot help the next generation to live for God unless they know his word and heed it themselves.

REVEAL THE TRUTH - Vss. 4-6a

Spiritually speaking, it is the responsibility of older generations of Christians to help the next generation. We are to train them in the things of God. Proverbs 22:6, Psalm 92:13-14

RESULTS OF THE TRUTH - Vss. 6b-8

When the next generation is taught the things of God, some very positive things happen.

1. They will teach their children. Vs. 6b

2. They will set their hope in God. Vs. 7a

3. They will not forget God's works. Vs. 7b

4. They will keep God's commandments. Vs. 7c

5. They will be better than their fathers. Vs. 8

Mark 8– TRAINING ACTIONS

MARK FOR MEN – A COMPLETE SET OF STUDY NOTES

LESSON #10

THINK ABOUT IT!

  •  What are some of the traditions in your church?
  •  When did you first learn to wash your hands before eating? What are some of the other healthy traditions your parents taught you?
  •  What are some of your favorite traditions?
  •  When is tradition good?  When is it bad?

In Mark 7 Jesus is found taking action in some way with those He comes in contact with.  One of the most significant actions he took was confronting the Pharisees about their traditions.

I. THE PHARISEES - CONFRONTATION - Vss. 1-13

A. THE QUESTION FOR JESUS - Vss. 1-5

  1. From the Panel - Vs. 1

  1. About the Disciples - Vs. 2

What did the Pharisees and scribes observe that disturbed them?

  1. Concerning Their Traditions - Vss. 3-5

The traditions were oral laws delivered by well-known rabbis.  They were

compiled in a book called the Mishna. The Mishna was said to be "a fence

around the law", supposedly keeping Jews from violating God's Word.

Instead the Mishna ended up giving the Jews excuses for violating God's

          Word.

B. THE PROBLEM IDENTIFIED - Vss. 6-8

  1. Hypocrisy of lip service - Vs. 6

What is hypocrisy?  Is it easy to say what we don't mean?  Why do we do it?

  1. Replacing of God's Word with Man's Tradition - Vss. 7-8

Why was their worship of God in vain?  Why was it dangerous?

C. AN EXAMPLE GIVEN - Vss. 9-13

  1. God's Teaching - Vs. 10
  2. Man's Tradition - Vss. 11-12

According to the rabbis, a man could neglect the care of his parents by

claiming that he was setting the resources aside as a gift to God.

See Matthew 23:23 for another example

  1. The Sad Result - Vs. 13

II. THE PEOPLE - WARNING - Vss. 14-16

A. CALL TO HEAR - Vss. 14, 16

Why did Jesus call the crowd together to give them this information.

How can we tell when we've really "heard" what Jesus has to say?

B. CLARIFICATION - Vs. 15

How can we apply this statement to our own lives?

III. THE DISICIPLES - EXPLANATION - Vss. 17-23

A. QUESTION AND REBUKE - Vss. 17-18

How ingrained was the teaching of the Pharisees?

Did this have anything to do with the question of the disciples?

B. THE ROUTE OF FOOD - Vss. 18-19

The Pharisees were concerned about defilement.  Does eating with unwashed

hands have anything to do with it?

C. THE CONDITION OF THE HEART - Vss. 20-23

Jesus pointed out that defilement is in the heart and comes out in our behavior.

IV. THE GENTILE WOMAN - CHALLENGE - Vss. 24-30

A.  THE CIRCUMSTANCES - Vss. 24-26

B.  THE MILD REBUKE - Vs. 27

C.  THE EVIDENT FAITH - Vs. 28

D. THE GREAT RESULT - Vss. 29-30

Matthew 15:28 - …O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt…

V. THE SICK MAN - COMPASSION - Vss. 31-37

A.  BROUGHT BY FRIENDS - Vss. 31-32

B.  TAKEN ASIDE AND HEALED BY JESUS - Vss. 33-35

C.  REPORTED BY ALL - Vss. 36-37

HEBREWS 11:7 – A PUBLIC FAITH

Some people think that faith is a quiet, private matter. In some senses that is true, but faith should always be a public matter. People should be able to see your faith by your actions. This was true of Noah. His faith could be seen.

NOAH WARNED - "By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet..."

Genesis 6:5-21

NOAH WORKED - "...moved with fear, prepared an ark..."

Genesis 6:22 - 7:16

NOAH WON! - "...to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith."

Genesis 7:17-8:22
