ROMANS 1:1-6 – A WORD OF ADVICE OR ADVICE FOR A NEW YEAR
I’ve gotten a lot of advice in my time. Two great sources of advice were my Dad and my mentor. (Give your own examples.)
This morning, as your Pastor, I want to give you a word of advice (I did it for the New Year).
KNOW WHO YOU ARE, AND ACT ACCORDINGLY!
Our example is the Apostle Paul. Paul knew who he was, and it affected his whole life.
Romans 1:1 - Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
Three things true of Paul and are true of you if you are a born-again Christian. You need to act on them!
Paul was a slave of Christ Jesus – you are a slave of Christ Jesus!
Paul was called – you are called!
Paul was set apart for the Gospel of God – you are set apart for the Gospel of God.
KNOW WHO YOU ARE, AND ACT ACCORDINGLY
TO HEAR HOW I PRESENTED THIS AS A NEW YEARS SERMON LISTEN AT:

NUMBERS 6:22-27 – BLESSED!
The blessing that the priests were to give was a blessing from God. When God blesses us we are:
BLESSED BY GOD'S PROVIDENCE
Numbers 6:24 - The Lord bless thee…
Numbers 6:25 - The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
BLESSED BY GOD'S PROTECTION
Numbers 6:24 - …and keep thee:
BLESSED BY GOD'S PEACE
Numbers 6:26 - The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

2 SAMUEL 11 – IT’S SO EASY!
David, who was a man after God's heart, sinned on many occasions. The most grievous of his sins was probably his affair with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah. David found out just how easy it is to sin and to displease God.
IT'S EASY TO BE LAZY - Vs. 1
Instead of going off to war with his soldiers, David stayed home. He was lax in his responsibilities.
One of the great problems we have as Christians is that we get lazy in our commitments to the Lord. If we do not continue to fight the world, the flesh, and the Devil, we become lazy. 1 Peter 5:8, Matthew 22:37-40, Ephesians 6:10-11
When we are lazy, we are more susceptible to giving in to temptation.
IT'S EASY TO LUST - Vs. 2
I think of lust as natural desire taken to the extreme. We have healthy natural desires, but when they control us, they lead to lust. 1 John 2:15-16, Matthew 5:27-28
IT'S EASY TO LET GO - Vss. 3-4
Lust in the heart is sin, but it also leads to the actual act of sin.
Instead of resisting sin, David let go of any control he had and committed adultery.
It's easy for us to give in to our lusts as well. When we do, it leads to trouble. James 1:13-15
IT'S EASY TO LOOK OUT FOR ONESELF - Vss. 8-27
David was looking to cover up his sin. As a result, he tried to make it look like Uriah had gotten his wife pregnant. Uriah never went down to his wife when he came home from the battle.
David then had Uriah murdered so that he could marry Bathsheba and make the whole thing look legitimate.
We are capable of doing some pretty low things to keep others from discovering our sins.
IT'S EASY TO LIVE A LIE – Vs. 27
David pretended to be living righteously, when , he was living in sin.
Many Christians pretend to be godly when they are not.
It is important to note that in all this God was displeased.

What did the ruler of a synagogue and a poor woman have in common?
Although their circumstances were different, they shared some similarities.

JOHN 13:34-35 – THE BADGE
We see people wearing badges all the time.
This morning we want to talk to you about your badge. That’s right, if you are a Christian you have a badge to wear which the Lord Jesus Christ has given you.
Badges are usually worn for identification purposes. That’s why Jesus has given you a badge. It’s so people can identify you as one of his followers.
John 13:34-35 - A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
God has made it very clear in His Word that love is supreme. Allow me to remind you of some things said about love in 1 Corinthians 13:1-3, 13
THE BADGE EXTENDED (ISSUED)
A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another;
When examining a piece of Scripture we need to ask ourselves, “Who is talking, and who is the person talking to?”
In this case the Lord Jesus is talking in a place called the “Upper Room”. It was where the last supper was served, and the place where Jesus humbled Himself and took the lowly servant’s duty of washing the feet of his disciples.
Jesus was not ministering to the multitudes. He was speaking to people who knew Him, loved Him, and trusted Him. He was speaking to His followers. He was speaking to believers!
Jesus did not extend the badge of love to everyone, but to those who were members of God’s family through their faith in Christ.
Today Jesus still does not extend the badge of love to everyone.
If you have trusted Christ as your Savior Jesus extends to you the badge of love that identifies you as one of His.
John 13:34- A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another
Notice that the badge that Jesus is issuing is a “new commandment”.
It was not new in the sense that people should love their neighbors. That’s found in the Old Testament – “Love thy neighbor as thyself”.
This new commandment of love is not a result of the law, The Ten Commandments.
This new commandment of love for Christians is because we are all members of the same family, the family of God. We are to love one another because each of us Christians has been born into the family of God.
How important is this badge of love?
1 John 4:7-8 - Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
When a person is issued a law enforcement badge, he receives with it authority and responsibility.
Jesus has extended to you the badge of love. With it come authority, responsibility, privilege, and responsibility.
You have Jesus’ authority (and power) to love others.
You have the responsibility to love others.
You have the privilege of loving others.
THE BADGE EXEMPLIFIED
…as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
Jesus gave us His own example to follow.
Come with me.
We are going to a garden called Gethsemane. Here Jesus takes His disciples with him to pray. They fall asleep.
In the meantime Jesus is saying, “O my father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.”
His love for the Father and us made Him yield to going to the cross.
Come with me again to Gethsemane. See the man who ate the same food, went to the same places, and did the same things as Jesus did betray Him with a kiss.
What would you say to someone you knew was about to betray you? Jesus simply said, “Friend, wherefore art thou come?”
Come with me. This time come to a trial before the high priest.
False witnesses are brought in. Jesus is convicted of blasphemy because he told them the truth that He was the Son of God.
Come with me, as we see His own friend and loyal companion Peter deny that He ever knew Jesus.
Come with me and see Jesus humiliated. Look at the guards placing a crown of thorns on the head of Jesus. See them hitting him on the head and spitting in His face. Look now as they pull the very hairs out of His beard.
Come with me to the cross. First, nails are placed in His hands and His feet. Then, they put him up in the air hanging on that cross. Then they make fun of him and taunt Him to come down off the cross.
What does He do?
Does He yell back?
Does He come down and destroy them as he very well could have?
No! Instead He says, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do!”
Jesus explains the badge we are to wear as Christians. He says that we are to love each other in the same way He loved us.
Do you see the love in His death?
Then let us strive to love each other the same way in life, and, if necessary, dying for each other.
THE BADGE EVALUATED
Jesus says that all men will know that we are His disciples when we love each other!
It is high time that each Christian evaluate his “badge of love.”
It is high time that we reflect on how important loving each other really is!
Let me ask you 3 questions.
When a badge is tarnished, it does not shine like it should.
When our badge is tarnished by sin we will not shine for Christ in love like we should!
There are sins of commission. These are things which we have done to hurt others. Matthew 5:23-24
There are sins of omission. These things that we have failed to do to help others. 1 John 3:16-18 –
It is time for you to polish up your badge.
Confess your sins and do what is right towards your brothers and sisters.
Proverbs 9:6 - Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
Has your badge been ripped in two by bitterness and unforgiveness?
Are you cold and indifferent towards other Christians because you are nursing a bitter spirit?
Bitterness occurs largely because we remember all the nasty things others have done to us and forget all the nasty things we have done to them! Ephesians 4:30-32
Can people see and feel that you love them?
Have you given any indication that you love them by the way you speak, listen and act towards them?
Romans 12:9-18

FIRST STEPS – REVELATION 1:1-8
THE BACK OF THE BOOK #1 (REVELATION)
This is a series of complete study notes. If you take a premillennial, pretribulational, position in prophecies, these notes may be helpful. I have shared these previously.
“The Book of Revelation is the scariest book in the Bible. Yet it is also one of the most comforting, reassuring, and exhilarating.” – Ray Stedman Ray Stedman, God’s Final Word, Understanding Revelation, (Grand Rapids, MI, Discovery House Publishers, 1991) p. 1
There is a Southern Gospel song sung by the Legacy Five that says, “I’ve read the back of the book, and we win.” The Book of Revelation is the back of The Book, the Bible, and indeed it shows the triumph of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because He wins, we win also!
Most folks who try to read the Book of Revelation have many questions and often get confused. One of the reasons for confusion is caused by the different possible ways of interpreting the Book.
FOUR MAJOR METHODS FOR INTERPRETING REVELATION
We believe in the futurist method for interpreting Scripture and believe that the things written in Revelation will literally come to pass.
Revelation 1:19 - Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;
The Book of Revelation was written about 96 A.D. by the Apostle John. In this study we are looking at the introduction to this book. We are taking our “First Steps” in understanding the Book of Revelation.
THE TITLE – Vss. 1-2
THE TREASURES – Vss. 3-4a
THE TRINITY – Vss. 4b-5a

the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
