RECENTLY PREACHED OR TAUGHT:
PHILIPPIANS 3:1-11
TOGETHER WE HAVE A GOAL Part 1
TOGETHER WE BELIEVE #6
· If you are like me, I get more done when I have a goal in mind.
· When I proposed to Dottie and she said “yes”, there were lots of goals set and achieved.
· We had to set a date, decide on a venue, plan the service and the reception, get a preacher, enlist our attendants, and send invitations. Dottie made her own dress, and I planned the Honeymoon. If we didn’t set goals, we would have never gotten things done!
· Together as Christ-followers we should have goals that are individual and corporate.
· One of the most important goals we should have is to be imitators of Christ, and thus be imitators of God.
· Christlikeness should be our goal!
· And to achieve this we must understand how it fits in God’s overall plan for our lives!
OUR WORKS-ORIENTED PAST – Philippians 3:2-6
· Vs. 2 – Judaizers teaching that circumcision is required for salvation – works oriented.
· Vs. 3 – Circumcision of the heart is of the utmost importance. Deuteronomy 30:6
· We should give self-effort for being acceptable before God so we can be forgiven and go to Heaven a vote of “no confidence”
· Vss. 4-6 - Paul enumerates reasons why, if anyone could have earned eternal life, it would have been him.
OUR CHRIST-CENTERED PRESENT – Philippians 3:7-9
· Vss. 7-8 – There came a day of reckoning when Paul counted all his self-effort as loss and trust Christ alone for salvation.
· Vs. 9 – Found in Him and trust Him for righteousness by faith. Titus 3:5, Romans 5:6-9, 1
· Why work for something that’s already paid for?
OUR LIFELONG PASSION – 1 John 3:1-3, Philippians 3:10-11
· 1 John 3:1-3 should instill a love for Christ in us causing us to desire to really know Him. 2 Corinthians 5:14-15
· To know him is to spend time with him and others who do.
· Knowing His power is to yield to His resurrection power through the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 1:19-21
· The “fellowship of his suffering” – to take abuse for Him as He took abuse for us. Acts 9:16, 2 Timothy 4:10
· As I die with Christ, the resurrected Christ lives in me. Romans 6:10-14

RAISING THE STANDARDS – PART 3
AT THE FEET OF JESUS #5
NOTE: When I taught Raising the Standards Part 2 I did not finish. I added the last point in Part 2 to the beginning of this lesson. Chose how you want to handle this.
· Why is having standards important?
· Do people always have the same standards for others as they do for themselves?
· How are Jesus’ standards different?
In Matthew 5 we have already seen that Jesus has higher standards for anger, marriage, honesty, and compliance. Finishing Matthew 5 and moving forward we see Jesus has higher standards for these areas as well.
HIGHER STANDARD FOR LOVE – Matthew 5:43-48
· Vs. 43 – What part of Leviticus 19:18 were the Pharisees ignoring?
· Vs. 44 – Compare with Luke 6:27-28.
· Vs. 45 – God, whose children we are (John 1:12-13), is the perfect example of one who loves and blesses His enemies.
· Vss. 46-47 – If we don’t love at a higher standard, we are just like unsaved people.
· Vs. 48 – As God’s children through the new birth, we should try to be imitators of Him. Ephesians 5:1-2
HIGHER STANDARD FOR CHARITABLE GIVING – Matthew 6:1-4
· Vs. 1 – “Charitable deeds” is also translated “righteousness” or “practicing your righteousness”.
· Do you know anyone who wants everyone to know what good things they are doing for others? According to Jesus, what is the danger of that?
· Vs. 2 – Those who purposely made known their charitable deeds received instant gratification, the praise of others.
· Vs. 3 – What does this verse mean?
· Vs. 4 – How does God reward charitable giving?
HIGHER STANDARD FOR PERSONAL PRAYER – Matthew 6:5-6
· Vs. 5 – The Pharisees loved praying where they could be seen. They wanted to look spiritual. We must guard against doing anything religious for the sake of looking spiritual. Isaiah 2:22 (ESV) - Stop regarding man in whose nostrils is breath, for of what account is he?
· Vs. 6 – This is another verse that tells us that God answers prayer. 1 John 5:14-15
· All of God’s answers are not Him rewarding us openly. However, we will certainly see proof that God is answering, especially when we pray for the Spiritual well-being of others!
HIGHER STANDARD FOR FASTING (PERSONAL SACRIFICE) – Matthew 6:16-18
· How were the Pharisees showing their hypocrisy when they fasted?
· Why is it Spiritual to act like you are not fasting if you are?
· Any personal sacrifice done to draw oneself closer to God should be done in such a way that we try not to draw attention to ourselves.

OUR ADVOCATE (Given as a brief Prayer Meeting devotional.)
· Recently we talked about the Triune God being on our side. We said that Jesus is God for us, the Spirit is God in us, and the Father is over us. Matthew 3:13-17
· Let’s center in on our advocate in heaven. 1 John 2:1-2
AN IMPOSSIBLE DEMAND
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.
· This is an impossible demand. John 1:8, 10
· So, if this is impossible why does he have this as an intent for his letter?
· As we strive to be more like Jesus, we are striving for less and less sin in our lives.
2 Corinthians 5:17, 2 Peter 3:18
· Being aware that we still do sin, John gives us encouragement.
IMMEDIATE HELP
And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
· God has provided for us immediate help for our impossible problem. What is humanly impossible for man is divinely possible through God the Son.
· The word advocate means “one called alongside to help.”
· When a Christian sins Satan accuses the Christian, as the “accuser of the brethren”. Jesus is there immediately to help. He is there to plead our case as one of his own.
· Jesus is there to help in Heaven. He is Jesus Christ, the righteous. Father listens! Our righteousness is through Jesus Christ.
IMMEASURABLE FORGIVENESS
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
· In other words, my friend, what Jesus did on the cross dying for your sins and paying for your sins in full is why He can be your advocate before the Heavenly Father. He can say to God the Judge, “Father, I died for that, forgive him.” Isaiah 53:4-6

There is none that doeth good.

MAN OF COMPASSION
Most church goers know the story of the Good Samaritan. I suggest you give the background of the story as found in Luke 10:25-29. Point out that the self-righteous lawyer was trying to justify himself, asking “Who is my Neighbor”.
Notice in verses 30-32 that a Jew was robbed, beaten, and left for dead. The “religious” people saw it and avoided helping. Then a hated Samaritan came along. He had what the religious people didn’t have, COMPASSION!

PRAYER REVISITED
(A COMPLETE LESSON)
What have you learned about prayer in the last year?
Why are there so many books, Bible studies, classes, and sermons about prayer?
In spite of all the teaching and preaching we have heard and read about prayer, it is still a topic that needs to be revisited by us. Why?
THE PRIVACY OF PRAYER
Matthew 6:6 - But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
John 15:7 - If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Private prayer is personal. It gives me a private audience with the ruler of the universe.
Private prayer allows me to pour out my heart to a God who cares and listens. 1 Peter 5:7
Private prayer brings me personally to the “Throne of Grace”. Hebrews 4:14-16
Private prayer gives me intimacy with God and the promise of public answers.
Why do we shun away from private prayer?
THE POWER OF PRAYER
James 5:16 – Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
How would you describe fervent prayer? Why do we often lack fervency?
James 5:17-18 - Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. [18] And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
1 Kings 18:37 - Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.
Elijah cared enough to pray earnestly for a drought because he was concerned about the righteousness of God. Elijah cared enough to pray down fire from Heaven.
What are some appropriate prayers we should be praying for the Spiritual needs of our congregation?
Mark 11:22-24 – And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. [23] For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. [24] Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
What do the verses above tell you about the power of prayer?
THE PERSISTENCE OF PRAYER
Luke 18:1-8 - And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; [2] Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: [3] And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. [4] And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; [5] Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. [6] And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. [7] And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? [8] I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?
How are we to be like the widow in this story?
Why does God love persistent prayer?
How is God different from the unjust judge?
What does Luke 11:5-13 add to the concept of persistent prayer?
THE PARTNERSHIP OF PRAYER
1 Timothy 2:1-6 - I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; [2] For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. [3] For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; [4] Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. [5] For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; [6] Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
“Supplications” means to ask for what is needed.
Prayers” is the general word for prayer and would include worship.
“Intercessions” would include praying for others.
“Giving of thanks” reminds us to be grateful as a
congregation.
According to this passage, what are some of the things we should be praying for and why?
What motivation do we have to pray for the souls of others?
1 Timothy 2:8 - I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
What hinders the prayers of a congregation?
THE PATTERN OF PRAYER
Matthew 6:9-13 - After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. [10] Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. [11] Give us this day our daily bread. [12] And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. [13] And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Let us talk through this prayer and pick out the specific things we should be praying for according to this text.
