PSALM 46 – SONG OF MY WELL-BEING

When you were born there was someone there to feed you, change you, clothe you, and protect you. They were concerned about your well-being.

When you were a toddler there was someone to teach you to walk and talk. They also made sure that you started to learn what was acceptable and unacceptable behavior. They were concerned about your well-being.

During school years there were parents and teachers who watched your progress, encouraged you, and yes made you do what you should do, even when you didn't want to. They were concerned for your well-being.

In marriage most of us have had a wife or husband who has been concerned about our well-being and have tried to watch that we were protected and well-cared for physically and emotionally.

Most of us have friends who care about our well-being.  At Village Bible we are concerned that people are physically, emotionally, and  most of all, Spiritually, cared for.

Above all others, it is God who cares about your well-being.

He is the one who created you.

He is the one who created you with the ability to chose between right and wrong. As well as being born a sinner, you have chosen to be a sinner, to disobey God.

He is the one who sent His Son to die in your place on the cross, so that you can have forgiveness of sins. Isaiah 53:5

He is the one who lets you choose between Heaven and Hell. John 3:36

If you have chosen the Lord Jesus as your Savior, God is still concerned about your well-being. After all, you are His child!

This morning we look into the Book of Psalms to find a Psalm or a song which really shows to me that God is concerned about how I am doing. Hence, I have dubbed it, "Song of My Well-being."

If you are feeling defeated, discouraged, afraid, or hurt this morning, this psalm should encourage you. This passage shows you that God cares about how the state of your affairs! He has not left you out in left field somewhere fending for yourself!  In Psalm 46 let's look at:

CONFIDENCE OF FAITH Vss. 1-3

Vs. 1

God is my refuge. Psalm 91:1, Psalm 27:5

God is my strength. Jeremiah 32:17, 27, Philippians 4:13

God is my present help in trouble. Isaiah 48:17, Isaiah 30:21, Psalm 16:8, Job 23:9, Deuteronomy 33:27, 1 Corinthians 3:16

Vss. 2-3 - The psalmist is envisioning it here. He says, "I will trust God even if the earth is moved, or the mountains are cast into the sea, or the waters cause a horrendous flood, or the mountains shake as a result.

Even if there is total chaos, I will trust God!

I do not know what you are facing today.

I know what I am facing.

No matter what is wrong or will be wrong in your life today, God can be trusted!

No matter what is wrong or will be wrong in my life today, God can be trusted!

THEREFORE WILL WE NOT FEAR!

CITY OF THE FUTURE Vss. 4-5

Vs. 4 - There are times in Scripture when something written                                                                                                                                                                                                               refers to the current situation and to the future.

The city of God was Jerusalem.

The holy place was the temple mount.

Because cities of that day were walled to protect from the enemy, it was necessary to have a water supply inside the city.

In the case of Jerusalem, it was the stream of Siloam.

I personally feel that in these verses, God is taking us beyond this city. There is a future city coming!  And though we face all sorts of calamities now, the city of the future will totally protect us. Hebrews 11:9-10, Hebrews 13:14, Revelation 21:1-4, Revelation 2:1-5

My friend, no matter what you face in this life, if you know Christ as your Savior, you have something better coming.

CONFRONTATION OF THE FOE Vss. 6-9

Vss. 6,8,9 - Israel often saw God fulfill these verses, and the enemies of God mightily defeated.

Kings like David, Hezekiah,  Jehosaphat and Josiah saw God's miraculous intervention in battle!

Vs. 9 says that He makes wars to cease unto the end of the earth. And that will happen!

Revelation 19:10-16, Psalm 2:7-9

Have you ever stopped to think how this effects your well-being? The enemies of God are defeated and you will live in peace. In fact, the biggest enemy of all, Satan, has already been defeated at the cross. He lives on borrowed time! The day is coming when no sin can ever touch you or anyone else!

COMFORT FOR THE FAITHFUL Vss. 10-11

Vs. 10 - The advice of this verse should first be applied to God's enemies. If God is going to end all war. If God, through His Son is going to bring everything and everybody into submission, it is best to bow the knee now!

It is best to be still now and know that Jesus is God now! – Philippians 2:10-11

My friend, if you haven't come to Christ, submitted to Him, placed your faith in Him. Please be still now. Do it now! John 3:36

Now there is comfort here for you and I who know Christ.

We need to be still, and let God work. We stop our fussing and fuming, and start trusting and resting in Him, He works. When we quietly give our problems to the Lord in prayer and believe that He will work, He does work! 1 Peter 5:7

Vs. 11 - The God of hosts is with us. And hear we think of the Heavenly Hosts. The Armies of Heaven. The one who commands the greatest army of all.

The God who has all the power and all the control is with us.

And then, the God of Jacob is our help.

God relates to frail.

God relates to the human.

God relates to Jacob, who, although he became a believer, was certainly a conniver and a sneak.

This is a comfort for me.

If God accepts Jacob, He will in the name of His Son accept me!

This great God who helped Jacob, is the God who helps me.

He wants me to be faithful in trusting Him.

COMFORT OF FAITH

CITY OF THE FUTURE

CONFRONTATION WITH THE ENEMY

COMFORT FOR THE FAITHFUL

ISAIAH 43:1-2 – REASONS TO BE ENCOURAGED

These truths from God to Israel are also true for the Christian.  There are four reasons for us to be encouraged given in these verses.

1. I AM GOD'S CREATION - Vs. 1a - Isaiah 43:1 (KJV) But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel,…

2. GOD IS MY REDEMPTION - Vs. 1b - ...for I have redeemed thee...

3. I AM GOD'S POSSESSION - Vs. 1c - ...thou art mine.

4. GOD IS MY PROTECTION - Vs. 2 - When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

MATTHEW 14:22-33 – IN THE STORM

Hebrews 13:8 (KJV) - Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.

There have been several public “storms” in my lifetime. Four come to mind:

  • The assassination of John F. Kennedy
  • The Challenger Disaster
  • 911
  • Corona Virus Pandemic

The current disaster is the one that is the most wide-spread and affects most of us more than the other disasters. Hebrews 13:8 reminds us that Jesus is still God and still here in the midst of this storm as he was in the storm in which He walked on water. Let’s learn about Him in the midst of any storm.

HIS PRESENCE IN THE STORM – Vss. 25-26

HIS PROCLAMATION IN THE STORM – Vs. 27

HIS PERMISSION IN THE STORM – Vss.28-29

HIS PERPLEXITY IN THE STORM – Vss. 30-31 – “Why did you doubt?”

HIS POWER IN THE STORM – Vss.32-33

JOHN 14:1-5 – WHEN THINGS LOOK BLEAK!

Things did not look good for the disciples.

Judas had betrayed Jesus. John 13:21-30

Jesus was going to leave them. John 13:33

Peter was going to deny to Jesus 13:36-38

Things will often not look good for us. Things will often look as bleak as a cloudy, rainy day.  We will often have struggles and troubles!  For those bad days, let's remember the encouraging words of Jesus to the Apostles when things looked bleak.

A COMMAND - Vs. 1

We are to believe in Jesus, even when things look the darkest! John 14:12-18, 27

A COMFORT - Vs. 2

There is a better place called Heaven. Jesus has gone there to prepare a place for us!

Revelation 21:1-8

A COMING - Vs. 3

Jesus will return for us! 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

A CONDITION - Vss. 4-6

Our way to peace now and heaven later is through faith in the Lord Jesus. He is the "way, truth and life"! Romans 5:1, 6-9

CONFIDENT CHRISTIANITY

(A complete study that I used in Sunday School)

  • Name some confident people you have known in your lifetime.
  • What makes some Christians more confident than others?
  • What are some things that rob Christians of their confidence?
  • The words “confident” and “confidence” appear several times in the Bible. They remind us that God wants us to be confident, not in our own strength, but in His.

A CONFIDENT HOPE

Psalm 27:1-3 - The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? [2] When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. [3] Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.

  • What are three things mentioned in verse 1 that help a Christian feel confident.  Why do they make us feel confident?

A CONFIDENT ANTICIPATION

2 Corinthians 5:6-10 – Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: [7] (For we walk by faith, not by sight.) [8] We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. [9] Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. [10] For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

  • What do you think it means that we are “absent from the Lord”?  How does this make us feel confident?
  • Was Paul giving up on life when he said that he was willing to be absent from the body and present with the Lord? Explain.
  • What should motivate us to behavior that is acceptable to the Lord, and why?

CONFIDENT MINISTRY

Acts 28:31 - Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.

  • What made Paul confident in his preaching?  See 1 Corinthians 1:18, 2:1-5

CONFIDENT ACCESS

Ephesians 3:12 - In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.

  • Why are we able to have boldness before God when we pray?
  • Why is having access to God such an amazing thing?  See Hebrews 4:15-16

CONFIDENT TRUST

Philippians 1:6 - Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

2 Thessalonians 3:4 - And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you.

  • What was Paul confident about in these verses?
  • What made Paul confident?
  • How is Philippians 1:6 a comfort when we think of the many spiritual difficulties that we and other Christians face.

CONFIDENT ENDURANCE

Hebrews 3:14 - For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

  • Is this verse teaching that we can lose our salvation? Explain.

Hebrews 10:35 - Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

  • How will our confidence be rewarded?

CONFIDENT APPEARANCE

1 John 2:28 - And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

  • How will abiding in Christ affect our appearance before Christ at His coming?
  • Why will it be a shame if we are ashamed at His coming?

CONFIDENT PRAYER

1 John 5:14-15 - And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:  And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

  • What prayer lessons do you see in these verses?
  • Why is faith or confidence such a big issue with God when it comes to prayer?

Mark 11:22-24 - And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. [23] For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. [24] Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

HEBREWS 11:7 – A PUBLIC FAITH

Some people think that faith is a quiet, private matter. In some senses that is true, but faith should always be a public matter. People should be able to see your faith by your actions. This was true of Noah. His faith could be seen.

NOAH WARNED - "By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet..."

Genesis 6:5-21

NOAH WORKED - "...moved with fear, prepared an ark..."

Genesis 6:22 - 7:16

NOAH WON! - "...to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith."

Genesis 7:17-8:22
