That’s Friendship!

Let’s talk about friendship this morning! A true friend is a lover. He loves his friends in a sacrificial way, just as Jesus loved us and commands us to do. John 15:12-14

Paul had many friends who demonstrated qualities of friendship which we may learn from and should imitate.

Timothy – A Concerned Friend – Philippians 2:19-24

  • Vs. 19 - Paul was in prison, waiting to appear before the Emperor. The church at Philippi needed someone to help them Spiritually. Paul planned to send Timothy, his loyal protégé.
  • Vs. 20 – Timothy cared about people. He was concerned for the Spiritual well-being of others.
  • Vs. 21 – Timothy’s priority was not pleasing himself, but the pleasing the Lord Jesus whom he served.
  • Vs. 22 – He was a man of proven character.
  • To be a good, concerned friend, we must first seek to please our Lord Jesus Christ, doing things His way!

Epaphroditus – A Commendable Friend

Philippians 2:25-30

  • I am impressed that many people in the Word of God make an appearance, leave their mark, and are gone!
  • Epaphroditus was one these individuals. He was sent by the church of Philippi to take financial relief, and to minister to Paul on behalf of the church. Philippians 4:19-20
  • Vs. 25 – Paul was not one to flatter or give praise where praise was not due. This five-fold commendation speaks volumes of his character.
  • Vss. 26-27 – Epaphroditus had been extremely sick. The Philippians heard of it and were concerned. Epaphroditus heard that they heard, and he was concerned. The love-band between him and his church was so strong, they needed to be reunited.
  • Vs. 28 - Paul was sending Epaphroditus was being sent home so everyone, including Paul, might have joy.
  • Vss. 29-30 – Men and women who do their jobs well and sacrifice for the sake of Christ and others, should be commended by the church.

Epaphras – A Committed Friend – Colossians 4:12-13

  • Epaphras was probably the founder and pastor of the church in Colossae and totally committed to Christ, and them. Colossians 1:7
  • Epaphras was committed to praying for the Colossians and other churches under his supervision.

Colossians 4:12

  • One of the best ways of supporting a friend is to pray faithfully for their Spiritual well-being. Colossians 4:2

Aquilla and Priscilla – Congenial Friends – Acts 18:1-3, 18-19 Acts 18:24-28, 1 Corinthians 16:19

  • Bringing Paul in as a fellow tent maker and believer
  • Quietly instructing Apollos in the Gospel
  • Hosting church in their home. 1 Corinthians 16:19, Romans 16:3-5
  • There is much to say for congeniality, especially when it encourages the saints! Romans 15:7, 1 Peter 4:9

Luke – A Consistent Friend – Acts 16:10–17, 20:1–15, 21:1-17, Acts 27:1–28:16, 2 Timothy 4:11

  • Paul described Luke as “the beloved physician”. Colossians 4:14
  • He was the human author of Luke and Acts.
  • He traveled with Paul often, but seemed to be there when needed, most notably on Paul’s trip to Rome as a prisoner. He was in that shipwreck!
  • At the end of Paul’s life, when he was again in prison, he could write, “Only Luke is with me.”
  • A consistent friend maintains a friendship and tries to be available at the most important times in a person’s life.
