I am weak, but Thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I’ll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.

Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Thou my everlasting portion,
More than friend or life to me,
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.

Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee;
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee. Fanny Crosby

The idea of a close walk with God is nothing new.

Enoch and Noah walked with God.

Abraham was the friend of God

David was a man after God’s own heart.

Jesus certainly walked with God told to abide in Himself.

John 15:4-5 - Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

So how do we walk with God on a daily consistent basis?

First, we need to know God by knowing Jesus.

John 1:12-13 - But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 gives a simple plan for walking with God.

Only the plan is simple. The actual carrying out of the plan takes love, sacrifice, dedication, perseverance, and, most of all, the power of God at work in our lives.

COMMUNICATE - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.

16 - Rejoice always,

Psalm 34:1-3 (NKJV) - I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make its boast in the LORD; The humble shall hear of it and be glad. Oh, magnify the LORD with me, And let us exalt His name together.

Psalm 92:1-2 (NKJV) - It is good to give thanks to the LORD, And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, And Your faithfulness every night,

Ephesians 5:18-19 (NKJV) 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,

Vs. 17 - pray without ceasing,
John 15:7 - If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

Colossians 4:2 - Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving;

John 14:13-14 - And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.

Ephesians 6:18 - praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints--

Vs. 18 - in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Ephesians 5:20-21 - giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.

COOPERATE – 1 Thessalonians 5:19

Vs.19 - Do not quench the Spirit.

Ephesians 4:30-32 - And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you.

CONSIDER – 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21A

Vs. 20 – Do not despise prophecies.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 - All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Romans 15:4 - For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.

Psalm 19:11

How committed are you to the Scriptures.

Psalm 119:97-105 (NKJV) 97 Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.
98 You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; For they are ever with me.
99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation.
100 I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts.
101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word.
102 I have not departed from Your judgments, For You Yourself have taught me.
103 How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way.
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

Vs. 21a - Test all things;

COMPLY – 1 Thessalonians 5:21B-22

Vs. 21b - hold fast what is good.

Vs. 22  - Abstain from every form of evil.
1 Samuel 15:22b-23a - ….Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry…

CONFIDENCE – 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

Vs. 23 - Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus never wants us to work independent of Him. “Without me you can do nothing.”

Vs. 24 - He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.

“You can trust the one who died for you.
