FRUSTRATED? – PSALM 73:23-28

• It’s easy to get frustrated!
• If you consider the decline of morals in our Country, you can get frustrated!
• If you consider the overall lack of respect for authority in our country, you can get frustrated!
• If you consider your own on-going struggle with bad habits, you can get frustrated!
• If you consider how the wicked seem to prosper and good people seem to struggle more, you can get frustrated!
• Enter Asaph, a worship leader in David’s day, and writer of several Psalms. He was having the same struggle.
• Vss. 1-3 – Asaph almost slipped despite God’s goodness when he became envious at the prosperity of the wicked. Wicked people prosper.  Righteous people suffer.  “It’s not fair”, we cry, and yet the problem has existed for thousands of years.  Asaph tells of his personal struggle with the issue in this Psalm.
• Vss. 4-14 - Asaph describes the condition of the ungodly “who prosper in the world”.
• Vss. 15-20 - It was not until Asaph consulted with God in His sanctuary that he began to understand the actual plight of the ungodly.
• Vss. 21-22 - He was convicted of his own foolish perspective that he had before he consulted with God.
• Vss. 23-28 - Asaph reminds how good the righteous have it.
• If you are a Christ-follower, these reminders are for you!

PSALM 139:1-14 – THE AWESOME PRESENCE OF GOD

Awe – “a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder.” Goggle Definitions

1 Chronicles 29:11 (NKJV) - Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, The power and the glory, The victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, And You are exalted as head over all.

Hebrews 12:28–29 (NASB 2020)

28Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let’s show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;

29for our God is a consuming fire.

Based on Psalm 139:1-14, I want to share with you the reality of God’s awesome presence. The goal is that it would leave us in awe!

MAINTAINING OUR FREEDOM – GALATIANS 5:1-15

TRULY FREE – STUDIES IN GALATIANS #9

5. What are some practical things that citizens can do to help our country maintain its freedom?
5. What are some practical things that Christians can do to help maintain their freedom in Christ?

Galatians 5-6 are the practical section of the Book of Galatians. Paul is showing what a life free from bondage to the law looks like. In these verses he shares some practical ways to maintain our freedom in Christ.

COMMAND – STAND FAST! – Vs. 1

• “Christ has made us free.”

• Free from the penalty of sin. Romans 5:6-9
• Free from the problem of law-keeping. Galatians 3:10
• Free from the power of sin. Romans 6:14
• Free from the (future) presence of sin. Revelation 22:14-15

• What are some things that can entangle us with “a yoke of bondage”?
• How is Christ’s yoke different? Matthew 11:28-30

CAUTION – STAY FREE! – Vss. 2-6

• Vs. 2 – If the Galatians, who were Gentiles, tried adding circumcision to salvation, they were denying the power of Christ to save them. Hebrews 10:14
• Vs. 3 – By obligating themselves to circumcision the Galatians would be obligating themselves to keep the whole law.
• Vs. 4 – When one adds law-keeping to salvation, they have left the grace principle.
• Vss. 5-6 – One who is saved by grace has the Holy Spirit working in their life, which produces hope and love.

CONCERN – SEPARATE FIRMLY! – Vss. 7-12

• Vss. 7-9 – Paul had good reasons to be concerned.
• Vs. 10 – Paul was confident the Galatians would comply, and that false teachers would be judged.
• Vs. 11 – False teachers evidently lied about Paul and said that he preached circumcision. If he did, he would not have been persecuted.

CHALLENGE – SERVE FONDLY! – Vss. 13-15

• Vs. 13 – Liberty in Christ is not freedom to sin, but freedom to serve through love.
• Vs. 14 – We fulfill the ethical requirements of the law when we love our neighbors as ourselves. Exodus 20:12-17
• Vs. 15 – Not loving our neighbors as ourselves produces strife.

PROGRESSING TOWARD CHRIST-LIKENESS – GALATIANS 5:16-26

5. As Christians, what is our ultimate goal? Romans 8:29, 1 John 3:2
5. Why will we not achieve this goal in this lifetime? Why should we strive to achieve this goal? 1 John 3:3,    1 Peter 1:13-16

The Galatians were considering going under the bondage of the law to achieve righteousness. In these verses Paul gives guidelines for becoming as much like Christ as possible.

THE WALK BY (IN) THE SPIRIT – Vss. 16, 18

• Vs. 16 – As believers, we have been born again through the Spirit and indwelt by the Spirit.  John 3:3-8, Romans 8:8-10, 1 Corinthians 12:13
• To walk by the Spirit is to be filled, controlled, and obedient to the Spirit in the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:18, Luke 11:13, Colossians 3:17
• Vs. 18 – To be led by the Spirit implies that you are following! One is not under the bondage of law-keeping for the sake of righteousness. Romans 8:1-4

THE WAR WITHIN US – Vs. 17

• The old “man” or nature hasn’t left us, but the new “man” is within us and through the Holy Spirit he is more powerful.
• Whichever nature has the upper hand, the other nature will fight to regain control.

THE WORKS OF THE FLESH – Vss. 19-21a

• Indecent Sins – Vs. 19 – “adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness”
• Irreverent Sins – Vs. 20 – “idolatry, sorcery”
• Interpersonal Sins – Vss. 20-21a – “hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders” 
• Indulgent Sins – Vs. 21a – “drunkenness, revelries”

THE WARNING AGAINST FALSE PROFESSION – Vs. 21b

• What is the difference between committing and practicing sin?
• We will be capable of sin until we die. Someone who is truly born again will show evidence of a new life.
• One who is not truly born again will not show on-going evidence of salvation. 2 Corinthians 5:17, Luke 8:11-15

THE WONDER OF FRUITFULNESS – Vss. 22-23

• Love – 1 Corinthians 13:1-13
• Joy
• Peace
• Longsuffering (Patience)
• Kindness
• Goodness
• Faithfulness
• Gentleness
• Self-control

THE WAY TO MATURITY – Vss. 24-26

• Vs. 24 – Being “crucified with Christ” is key. Galatians 2:20, 6:14-15
• Vs. 25 – If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. (ESV)
• Vs. 26 – How are we warned by this verse?

TITUS 3:4-7 – WE HAVE IT!

Lesson #6a - GODLY LIVING IN THE CHURCH

(A Complete Lesson)

• Count your blessings!  What things do you have from God for which you are grateful?
• Why is it that we tend to moan over the things we don’t have instead of being appreciative for what we do have?
• Ephesians 1:3 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

In Titus 3:1-7 we find Paul presenting some “basics” that are important for us to understand as Christians.  In verses 1-3 we have already seen how we are to behave as Christians and what we were as unbelievers. The three-point outline for verses 1-7 is mine, but the idea of three sections of seven points each comes from John MacArthur. John MacArthur, The MacArthur New Testament Commentary – Titus, (Chicago, Moody Press, 1996), pp.136-155 

In this lesson, which covers the last of the three points, we examine what we have in Christ according to verses 4-7.

WHAT WE HAVE IN CHRIST

1. KINDNESS – Vs. 4

• We have already itemized many ways that God has been kind to us when we counted our blessings.
• Look at what we were as unbelievers in verse 3.  Why did we need God’s kindness?
• Why is God’s kindness such an amazing thing?
• How kind would you be if someone treated you the way you as an unsaved person, or even now as a saved person have treated God?
• According to Romans 2:4 the kindness (goodness) of God should lead us to repentance.

2. LOVE FOR MANKIND – Vs. 4

• What Bible verses come to mind when you think of the love of God towards man?
• What important doctrinal teaching concerning Christ is alluded to in this verse?  Why is it often challenged by people living under the “Christian” banner and those who do not claim to be Christians?
• By his very action of going to the cross, Jesus screams to us, “I love you!”  Why are we as Christians so passé about this love?

3. MERCY – Vs. 5

• Why are people so hung up on earning their way to Heaven?
• Why is God so adamant here and in other passages that man can not earn his way to Heaven?
• According to John MacArthur, “…grace relates to guilt, mercy relates to affliction.”  God took pity on our need. MacArthur, p. 154

4. WASHING OF REGENERATION – Vs. 5

• Look at John 3:1-8 – What is amazing about the new birth?
• What part does God’s Word have in regeneration?

Ephesians 5:26 - That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
James 1:18 - Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
1 Peter 1:23 - Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

5. RENEWING OF THE HOLY GHOST

2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
John 14:16-18 - And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
John 16:13-14 - Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Galatians 5:22-23 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Ephesians 3:16-17 - That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith…

6. JESUS CHRIST OUR SAVIOR – Vs 6

• How is the work of God, the Holy Spirit, dependent upon the work of God, the Son?
• How are God, the Father’s mercy and grace totally wrapped up in God the Son?
• Why should we always remember as believers that Jesus is our Savior?  What impact should that have on the way we live?

7. GRACE – Vs. 7

• According to this verse, “What’s so amazing about grace?”
• Whose heir are we?  How should this affect us?

 

Romans 8:16-17 - The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Revelation 20:6 - Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

HEBREWS 7:1-10 – MELCHIZEDEK

HIS POSITION – Vs. 1a - For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the most high God…

HIS PARTICIPATION – Vs. 1b - …who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;

HIS PLACE – Vs. 2 - To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; - It was his place to receive tithes because of whom he was, “King of righteousness and King of peace”.

HIS PERPETUITY – Vs. 3 - Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. – Melchizedek was a picture of Christ. Therefore there is no record of his birth or death. He is the picture of the One who abides forever.

HIS PROMINENCE – Vss. 4-10 - Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham: But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises. And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better. And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.  – The Levites, who received tithes under the Old Testament Law, paid tithes through Abraham, because they were his descendents. “…the less is blessed by the better.”
