MATTHEW 3:13-17 – TOGETHER, GOD IS ON OUR SIDE

TOGETHER WE BELIEVE #5

I walked into his office at the recommendation of a friend. He listened to my tale of woe. Another professor at Glassboro State College (Rowan University) was not happy with me because she caught me looking out of a window. That was wrong. But after that I could not do anything right in her eyes. He was sympathetic and suggested that I talk to the department chair. Which I did. This was a two-semester course in my major, elementary education. With the department chair’s help I changed professors and got the one I went to see. My first teacher gave me a “D” for the course. I didn’t deserve that. The next semester I got an “A” from the other teacher. I didn’t deserve that either! That professor was on my side, I believe, trying to equal out a wrong against me. I apologized to the first teacher.

I love Psalm 118:6. It reminds me that the Lord is proactive towards us through the work of the Trinity or Triune God.

The word Trinity is not used in Scripture but the truth is taught. There is one God with three members of the Godhead. Each has all the attributes of God and each is said to be God.

No explanation of the Trinity is perfect, but I think of a family. Dottie and I and our son, Dave are all Peters, but each of us has a different personality and duties. The Triune God is on our side! Let’s see how!

Psalm 118:6 – The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: What can man do unto me.

RAISING THE STANDARDS – PART 2

MATTHEW 5:33-48 – AT THE FEET OF JESUS #4

· Name a product you use that seems to have a higher standard for quality.

· When will you insist on a better-quality product and when will you “settle for less”?

· As our Lord, Jesus insists on higher standards for His disciples. Matthew 5:20

In the rest of Matthew 5, our Lord Jesus gives us five areas in which we as Christians should have higher standards. Last week we saw that Jesus has a higher standard for anger and for marriage (Matthew 5:21-32). Here are three more areas where Jesus sets higher standards.

HIGHER STANDARD FOR HONESTY – Vss. 33-37

· Taking the Lord’s name in vain and filthy talk are both are sin. Exodus 20:7, Ephesians 4:29

· Vs. 33 – Jesus is talking about oaths or swearing that something is true or that you are going to do something. They were swearing by God or something or someone higher than themselves.

· Solemn promises before God or speaking under oath are not wrong if you keep your promise or tell the truth. Numbers 30:2, 2 Corinthians 1:23, Matthew 26:63-64

· Vss. 33-36 – The problem was evasive swearing. They thought if they didn’t swear in God’s name (Leviticus 19:12), they were free to be dishonest. How is Jesus showing that these ways of swearing are wrong?

· Vs. 37 – The bottom line is “Tell the truth!” Why do we struggle with this?

HIGHER STANDARD FOR COMPLIANCE – Vss. 38-42

· Vs. 38 was an Old Testament judicial law to make punishment fair. Leviticus 24:17-22

· Vss. 39-42 – The higher standard is for us to surrender our personal rights and comply with what comes our way.

· Practically speaking, what does complying with each of Jesus’ standards look like?

· Why is the command to give to everyone in verse 42 especially hard to figure out?

HIGHER STANDARD FOR LOVE – Vss. 43-48

· Vs. 43 – What part of Leviticus 19:18 were the Pharisees ignoring?

· Vs. 44 – Compare with Luke 6:27-28.

· Vs. 45 – God, whose children we are (John 1:12-13), is the perfect example of one who loves and blesses his enemies.

· Vss. 46-47 – If we don’t love at a higher standard, we are just like unsaved people.

· Vs. 48 – As God’s children through the new birth, we should try to be imitators of Him. Ephesians 5:1-2

Leviticus 6:1-7 – DEALING WITH SIN

The way sin was dealt with in the Old Testament reminds us how to deal with it today.

REVELATION – A MAN HAS SINNED – Vss. 2-3

A person must first become aware of his or her sin.

RESTORATION – WHAT IS TAKEN IS RESTORED WITH INTEREST – Vss. 4-5

Today we must admit our sins to those we have offended and seek their forgiveness. Matthew 5:21-24

REPENTANCE – AN OFFERING IS TO BE BROUGHT – Vs. 6

Christ has already died for our sins as Christians. We need to confess them. 1 John 1:9

REINSTATEMENT – THE PERSON IS FORGIVEN – Vs. 7, Ephesians 4:30-32

1 CHRONICLES 22 – PLANNING AHEAD

David had wanted to build a temple for God. However, God forbade him from doing so, but said that his Son would build a temple. David did not have hard feelings. He planned ahead to make it easier for the project to be completed by Solomon and the other leaders of the kingdom.

DAVID GATHERED RESOURCES – Vss. 1-4

DAVID EXPLAINED REVELATION – Vss. 5-9

David explained to Solomon what had been revealed by God.

DAVID ENCOURAGED RESPONSIBILITY – Vss. 11-19

Responsibilities of Solomon – Vss. 11-16

Responsibilities of the Princes – Vss. 17-19

Psalm 16:4-5 - DETERMINATION

Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips. The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.

One of the most determined people I know is our son Mark. When he decides he's going to do something it will get done. When he was studying music in college he discovered that he was using the wrong technique to blow his trumpet. One summer he came home from college and stopped playing. Then, he slowly started relearning how to blow his trumpet. By the end of the summer he had learned to do it correctly. Before he completed his under graduate studies, he had become "first chair".

When it comes to serving the Lord we need a good bit of determination. David shows his determination in our text.

REASON FOR SORROW - Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god:

When people do not serve the Lord but follow other "gods" they are asking for trouble.

True peace only comes from commitment to Christ. Matthew 11:28-30, John 14:27

RESOLVE OF FAITHFULNESS - their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.

Even as Christians our hearts can sway to the worship of activities, things, and people. We must resolve not to act like the unsaved.

RESERVATION FOR THE LORD - The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.

The Lord should be my priority! He is the one who will preserve me now and forever!

LUKE 4:16-30RETURN TO THE HOMETOWN

Most of us have problems thinking of children we've know for years as grown up. I can still remember many years ago when friends of my parents were surprised that I drank coffee! They probably still thought of me as little "Jackie" Peters.

You can imagine the surprise of the local folks in Nazareth when the "boy" they watched grow up now presented himself as a religious teacher and as the Messiah. When Jesus came back for a visit to his hometown we find:

JESUS' CUSTOM - TO ATTEND CHURCH - Vs. 16

Jesus, of course, went to the synagogue. But where there was worship for God and learning of His Word, the Lord Jesus was there. If the Son of God found it important to attend services, shouldn't we?

JESUS' COMMUNICATION - THE WORD OF GOD - Vss. 17-19

Jesus used the word of God to communicate a message from God.

May we remember that the most important thing we can do is to communicate the Word of God to others.

JESUS' COMMENTARY - THE WORD HAS BEEN FULFILLED - Vss. 20-27

Jesus had quoted from Isaiah 61:1-2a. It is interesting that he stopped reading in mid-sentence. The first part of Isaiah's prophecy was fulfilled at his first coming. The rest will be fulfilled at His Second Coming.

JESUS' CONFLICT - THE PEOPLE DIDN'T LIKE WHAT HE SAID - Vss. 28-30

Very often we will run into the same problem. However, people not liking the truth is not a reason for silence.

ROMANS 2:1-16 – GOD KNOWS!

In Luke 18:9-14, Jesus told a parable …unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:

The Lord told about two men who went into the temple to pray. One was a

Pharisee, part of a religious sect in Israel that tended to be a very

legalistic and self-righteous group. The other was a tax collector or

publican. The tax collectors were hated because they often cheated their

fellow Jews, and because they were considered traitors who worked for the

Roman government that ruled Israel.

Vss. 11-12 show the pride and self-righteousness of the Pharisee.

Vs. 13 shows the sorrow for sin in the tax collector.

In Vs. 14 Jesus gives the morrow of the story, "I tell you, this man went

down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that

exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be

exalted."

One of the easiest things to do is to be self-righteous. We can always find

someone we consider not as well behaved as we are. We then compare ourselves

to that person, and feel that compared to that person, we are doing just

fine!

There are many people who feel that they are going to Heaven because they

are not immoral like others. They are not adulterers, murderers, bank

robbers, or even blasphemers. In fact they find fault with that sort of

person, and consider themselves way above those sinners.

There are also many born-again Christians who feel pretty good about

themselves because they compare themselves with other Christians. Their

church attendance is better than others. Their devotional life is better

than others. The places they go or don't go are better. The Bible they use

is better.

Paul confronts the self-righteous in Romans 2:1-16. These would be people

who read Romans 1:25-32, which concerns the heathen. They would have

considered themselves well above that kind of behavior. They would not

consider themselves to be this bad.

In our text Paul confronts the person who felt that he would get to Heaven

because he was not like those sinners mentioned in Romans 1! He shows in

this passage that the self-righteous person is just as guilty as the blatant

sinner. If Paul was writing today, he might point out that just being in

church and living an outwardly moral life is not going to get you into

Heaven. Because we are all sinners, we need a Savior, one to die for our

sins. That's the Lord Jesus!

There is a reminder in this passage for those of us who know we are saved.

The reminder is that we have no right to stand as critics of others. So

often we have critical statements to make concerning sinner and saint alike.

To be honest, very often our criticisms are not valid.

Why should we be so careful about our criticisms of others? Very simply,

this passage shows us that God knows about us. He is the one that has the

right to judge, and ultimately, He will! GOD KNOWS!

GOD KNOWS THE TRUTH - Vss. 1-3

Vs. 1 - The person who judges and condemns another person is actually

condemning himself! To judge someone else is to show that you have a

conscience. You show that you have some sense of what is right and what is

wrong. In showing that you know right and wrong, you condemn yourself,

because you and I who judge others are guilty of the same things. Matthew

5:12-22A, Matthew 5:27-28, John 8:1-11

Vs. 2 - When God judges it will be according to the truth. There will be no

fooling God.

Vs. 3 - Criticizing others for their sins does not excuse someone from their

own sins.

GOD KNOWS YOUR NEED - Vss. 4-5

He knows that you need to repent and turn to Christ for forgiveness. 2

Corinthians 5:21, Ephesians 2:8-9, Psalm 32:5

GOD KNOWS YOUR DEEDS - Vss. 6-10

God knows what your deeds are and they will be judged.

GOD KNOWS YOUR SITUATION - Vss. 11-15

God is totally impartial. The person who had the law of God will be judged

by the law of God. The one who did not have the law of God will judged by his conscience.

GOD KNOWS YOUR MOTIVES - Vs. 16

All the secrets will come out.

The unsaved will be judged at the Great White Throne - Revelation 20:11-15

The saved will stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ - 2 Corinthians 5:10, Romans 14:12

If you are self-righteous about salvation, turn to Christ for forgiveness

and eternal life. If you are self-righteous as a Christian, confess and forsake that sin!

HEBREWS 5:11-14 – TIME TO GROW UP!

Some people have been Christians for years have never matured in the things of God. Paul is exhorting the Christians in these verses to "grow up"!

THEIR DULLNESS - Vs. 12 - Paul had much to say about the Lord as a priest according to the order of Melchizedek (Vss. 1-10), but could not utter them because they were "dull of hearing".

THEIR DELAY - Vs. 12 - They should have been teachers, but instead needed to learn their "A, B, C's".

THEIR DISADVANTAGE - Vs. 13 - There was no problem with drinking milk, or the basics of the Word of God, (1Peter2:2), but "babes in Christ" are to move on from the "milk" of the word, and add the "meat" of the Word. to their diet.

THEIR DISCERNMENT - Vs. 14 - Discernment of good and evil would come as they grow up to digest "strong meat"
